So you decided to install the Mercury anyway, he he! That's going to be a low flying superfast boat! Have fun with it!

VG30det Powered Navara Ute +++Its ALIVE+++

Post by tassuperkart »

Its alive men!

I finished off all the little arsehole jobs that had been put off such as make a custom PCV setup, make a bung to replace the original radiator drain tap (wont fit behind the cooler core) and sundry other water lines around the motor.
Just fit everything up and have a look around.

I powered up the ECU and loaded a running config file from an RB25det which contains most of the CAS info I needed to get it to trigger.
About another 40 minutes on the laptop re-configging the AUX in and outs to suit my wiring setup and provide a power supply for the CAS I had forgotten to run along with calibrating the TPS ( I even had it wired the correct way!!!)
I plugged in all the looms and so-on and I used an old CAS I had laying around to test with just in case I had some wiring wrong. Put power to the system and the fuel pump wizzed away to prime and then shut off after 5 seconds which is what it should do.

Bringing up the ECU info file showed that the temps were reading ambient which is close enough to run it. The TPS was working fine.
I still havent calibrated the MAP and temp sensor tho. Ill calibrate them all later on. I just used the figures that came along with the ECU file I loaded.
Its just a "suck it and see" right now.
I gave the CAS a spin by hand and everything triggered and then a lound bang in the plenum....hehehehehe! Id forgotten to bleed off injector fuel pressure and disconnect the pump.
Originally, I had planned to crank the motor over with no plugs in to prime the oil system and check the cranking ignition advance but I had gone ahead and installed the plenum/TB chamber and you cant remove the plugs on one side with it there.......... bah...be brave and step into the new world I say! Its not like its a new un-run engine anyway so itll prime up!

Oh well, moment of truth, hold the breath, give it a crank and roared away into life the moment the engine cranked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOOOT!!!!
Missing a little bit here and there until those grubby injectors cleaned themselves out.
Oil pressure came straight up, lifters quietened down and the thing sat at smooth 1400rpm, alternator output 13.85v, clutch disengaged easily and gears select and thing moves a bit under its own steam for the first time in over 6 months!!!!!!...Yeeeeeharr!
Oil dribbled out of the turbo oil supply i had purposely left loose indicating all is well in the oil system.

The 3" mandrel zorst cackles a bit when its revved up tho............ doesnt boom at all buts its a bit loud nonetheless. It does have that that glorious 300Zed V6 rolling note to it...might have to add another muffler to shut it up bit!!!!!!! Later tho.
It popped a bit when the throttle was hit really quickly but revved up pretty clean with the throttle opened gently.

I let it run like this to look for water leaks but it kept foaming water out of the radiator as i didnt bleed the system properly (havent installed the bleed valve in the high point yet have I!!! mah!)
Oh well, temps came up to 90 DegC and the fan came on so yay again!

The timing is wrong still as the thing pops, farts and kicks back a bit when cranked over hot but I didnt even bother checking it. Feels advanced to buggery which will account for the fast idle right now. Given it started so easily shows its not too far away from where it should be.
Got to remove the plastic coil/plugs cover, lift up #1 coil and run a short plug lead down onto the plug sos I can get the timing light onto it!!!- Gotta sort out an alternative to this.
What does everybody else use on a COP arrangement?
I have to find the CAS offset setting in the software and change it so all the timing settings in this ECU file actually mean something!
Hopefully, Ill have the radiator system bled correctly next time as well and wont have to frig with it again.

However, all in all, Im pretty pleased with it and with this ECU file loaded the thing will be pretty much driveable straight away.
More later

You have to run a little video of the beast when you take it for a strap.
would be good to see and hear.

Sounds good.

I am not rich enough to play with anything that has COP yet........

Your idea sounds the best though. Just a little old extension lead on cyl 1 to monitor base timing.

Careful with that amount of torque. YOu might boot it on your first test drive, only to flip it onto its side instantly :)

Good luck. It shall be interesting to see how your "clearance" goes when you get engine under some load.

Darren.
Race it.

Fixed the cooling system bleeding problem. I added an external bleeder point at the highest point in the system.

Found a small leak in one of the turbo water banjos as well so patched that up.

I also found that the IAC valve (idle stepper) is not working. I couldnt get it to idle much lower than about 2100 rpm..................
In the end, I simply blocked off the IAC valve altogether.

Due to reasons that dont matter, Im only getting about 60% throttle this minute.
Ill fix that later.

I sorted the ignition timing issue out by locking the timing in the ECU at 0 deg and then used the CAS offset setting to subtract about 15 degrees of ignition.
Unlocked the ignition to about 17 degrees@ idle and the thing just sits there purring away as smooooooth as you like. The engine is so fucking smooth. Revving it up you can barely feel it at all.

Ist got a very unusual zorst note tho! When you rev it up it has that unmistakeable 300 Zed V6 roll but at other times it sounds like a straight six shooter.......
On throttle over-run, it makes this very unusual chatter in the pipe like a 4 bvanger with a straight thru syste, Ive not heard a turbo car make this sound but its not loud and dies away as the revs drop off. 2 grand and its gone.

OK time to give it a quick test drive. I have done no tuning at all so it was running with about a 20% global enrichment to get it to start and run on the RB25det fuel map and was a little choppy and hesitant on the throttle at around 1/4 to 1/2 opening.

Its sooo smooth tho....damn its like a V8 its so smooth!!!!!!!!! You just can feel it running at all.

Makes a loud whistling schwoooshing on boost with a mad flutter!!!!!!!!!!! Thatll keep all you hooligans happy!
There is no way of disguising whats happening under the bonnet tho. Even driving gently. Its pretty much schwooshing and whistling at idle!!!!!

Turbo spools from very low down, like almost right off idle and produces plenty of low down grunt as expected but i was pretty hesitant to give it any berries as I dont have the Techedge WBO2 sensor and controller in place to check AFR's so just gave it a little tap here and there.
Its got plenty thats for sure.

Just as I was coming back down the hill and playing with the throttle listening to that turbo swooshing and fluttering and squeeeeeeelllllll.................... no boost............. turbo shat itself.............................. Its fucked the bearings.
Dont you hate that?
