Trouble selecting reverse gear
Hello all,
This issue has kind of always been there since I got the car.
Sometimes when I'm trying to reverse park (it seems to be more favourable rather than reversing into traffic with a sticky reverse gear), sometimes it just won't get into reverse gear unless I pump the clutch a few times.
I've been told that the thrust bearing has come loose in the gearbox but I have noticed that it has been squealing less these days. Also, last time I got it serviced the dudes replaced the gearbox oil. This has generally made gear selection easier but reverse can be stubborn on occasion. Actually, there was one occasion where I was trying to parallel park up a hill and I just could not get it to co-operate! That was before I discovered the clutch pumping trick.
I'd like to know what's going on with it, please enlighten me!

There is a few reasons. one is the one i know too many times. the bar that stabilizes the gear leaver, if its bent it will cause the gears to be out and cause more dramas then you can imagine. i know i lost 2nd, 4th and reverse with issues with the bar.
It could be the rear engine mount too i know ive been there too.
maybe someone could tell you if its the sincro gears or sumfin.

Well, you can also put in 1st gear and drive the car a couple of centimeters forward, then try reverse again. That usually helps, but doesn't solve the problem of course.
This method relies on the fact that the reverse gear isn't synchronized. Well, 1st gear isn't either, but that's beside the point. If the gears don't mesh up when you select reverse, driving the car forward a tiny bit in 1st gear usually gets the gears in a better position to mesh up properly when you select reverse again.
To answer your question, Reswob; my biggest issues with getting in the reverse gear (and other gears as well) were solved by adjusting the gear lever's position relative to the engine in a way that the engine isn't pulling the lever or the lever bracket. The position of the stick can be adjusted ~1½-2 cm in total, and it does definitely make a difference how you adjust it. You need to get under the car to make the adjustments, preferably put the car on a hoist.
I don't think it's possible to eliminate the problem of getting in reverse completely, since reverse isn't synchronized... but there shouldn't be any big effort getting the reverse gear in.

My exa would never go into reverse until I went into say 4th gear then wacked it straight into reverse..So try putting the clutch in, put it in 4th whilst your obviously not moving, then try going into reverse, If it's something similar to what i had then it should just slip in...Throws a sausage up a hall way
