Hollow squeal - front of engine

Post by dexi_styles »

I have a squealing noise coming from the pully area of the engine.

Now has anyone had a similar noise? and do they know what it was?

its a noise I originaly thought it was the turbo, but the noise stops before the turbo, so its not that,

So i put my head under the car and noticed it came from the drivers side of the engine.

My thought are its a bottome bearing or.... what im now thinking of is the water pump.

Any thought form you guys??

Cheers,
Dex

First thought it was the belt too tight, but its not the belt

I'll just have to get it checked.

Undo the alternator belt tension nut and take the FAD belt off.

Start the engine and see if your noise has gone.....

Just don't run it for too long as you have no water circulation and no battery charge.

But this will tell you real quick if its the Front Accessory Drive....quick easy check. While you are there manually rotate the alternator and water pump, maybe you will feel/hear the noise......

Thanks mate,

thats the kinda info i was looking for. I will try that when i get the time.

Its not a constant noise so I'm not sure with hearing it when i spin it by hand, but ill give it a go

I seem to have the same issue. Because I've just relocated to Sydney, I don't even have a toolbox. I think the mechanic replaced the alternator belts but they are at the wrong tension. I might ask him about it, as I think the parts are under warranty.

Hey dex. I've noticed mine lately has a huge rattle from that same area, but mine seems to be coming from under the timing covers. I had a squeal, but something had bent an altenator fin, and it was rubbing on the body of the alt, bent it back out, fixed it up.

Carefully while the engine is running, rub some drilube on the 'v' of the belt and see/hear if that fixes it.

Either that, or an overtightened cam belt can display a squeal too!

cheers guys,

I think i have sussed it out to be the turbo. started to play up. I might go have a look at the ALT fins, might be that.

I havent looked at it for a couple of weeks, been off the same time as the missus from work (you know what its like) I'll try and get to it this week n ave a look.

OK so i have just put my old turbo back on, and same noise. I tried removing the alternator belt and the noise was still there. its only there on idle and goes away when i rev it. it sounds like metal rubbing on metal lightly, just enough to give a howling squeal. (I have a sound like when you fill a crystal wine glass 1/2 full of water and rub a wet finger around the rim but more metalic and a little grind/rubbing)

I cant seem to find out where its coming from now.
so I have a few questions to what it would be.

Would it be a mix up of vacuum lines? incorrectly placed on sending valves backwards vibrating noises???

water pump, but the noise was still there when i took the alternator belt off... so maybe not

a bearing somewhere but it only happens on idle, goes away when i rev. so i dont think so as it would get higher pitch or constant.

Any other inputs?

Its ok I'm bout to take it in to get an exhaust and tune in two weeks so i'll get it looked at then.

Hello all,

In my situation it appears that the the squealing noise is caused by the throttle bearing coming loose in the gear box. Now I have to wait til I have to replace the slipping clutch before I can get that fixed. :( It's going to make me deaf.

Have you tried the dri lube on the belts?

Do you still have the air con?

Oil pump is nowhere near the timing cover!

throttle bearing coming loose in the gear box.
I think you mean thrust bearing, and this should only present with foot on the clutch. Otherwise it may be an input shaft bearing which is ass about compared to the thrust, noise with clutch out, no noise with clutch in.
