1983 exa turbo - bayside blue and 81POLR!!!!
Hi Guys,
After deciding it was time to part with my n13, I set my eye on finding an n12 exa/et pulsar in good condition. After lots of trawling the classifieds, I located Dean's one down in canberra. The gf drove me there in her car in anticipation, and I ended up buying it and driving it home to sydney. At the moment it has been returning 7.5l/100km and has 133kw atw, and I am very happy with both these figures.
A lot of quality work and parts has gone into this exa in the past, and it is running immaculately. There is barely anything to fix/upgrade at this point in time, and it brings a smile to my face everytime i start her up
Here is a list of the work done to it to this point in time:
Engine:
E15et engine rebuilt 4 years ago and driven seldom
40 thou ACL duralite pistons
ACL main bearings
King big end bearings
Re-ground crankshaft
Stage 3 watson cam
Fully balanced rotating assembly
Rebuilt and ported head
Rebuilt and ported inlet manifold
VL throttle body
Garret GT2876r turbo
4 inch unifilter
Custom exhaust manifold
3 inch dump pipe
50mm external wastegate and screamer pipe
2.5 inch mandrel bent exhaust system after 3 inch dump pipe
Microtech MT4 Computer
Custom billet fuel rail with speedflow fittings
550cc injectors
Walbro fuel pump
Turbosmart fuel pressure regulator
Turbosmart megasonic BOV
FMIC (450x300x76) with custom chrome piping, heat wrap and turbosmart elbows
2 large thermo fans
Oil catch can
85 amp alternator
Battery relocated to boot
Drive Train:
N12 turbo 5 speed with LSD (rebuilt gearbox)
RPM high performance clutch
Suspension/Wheels/Brakes:
15 inch alloy wheels
Pedders lowered springs front and back
Pedders shocks
New ferodo performance brake pads
New front brake rotors
Interior/Stereo:
Clean and original series 2 interior with slight wear on front seats
Aftermarket steering wheel
Carpets all replaced
Turbosmart boost gauge
In-car Microtech handset
Kenwood CD player with USB and AUX
Sony 400w amplifier
Kenwood 12inch sub in custom ported box
Exterior:
Full yellow respray done about 4 years ago
Deleted plastic mouldings
Deleted rear wing
Bonnet modified to fit FMIC and also allow better airflow/reduce heat sink
Modifications that I have the parts for/will do soon:
-stock bonnet to be resprayed
-new switches for demisters and hazards (because I am retentive about having old cars look as new as possible)
-whiteline front sway bar
-swap 15" white CSA rims from the n13 over
Future work/modifications:
-install a turbo timer/alarm system
-detail engine bay
-rebuild front brakes
-upgrade to ET 4 wheel disk brakes, which also allows for a rear sway bar to be added
-replace oil return hose with braided line
-replace stock rear struts with some firmer ones
-strut braces and nolathane bushes
Cheers,
Mike

There's been plenty happening with this car since I bought it, time to update this thread. In the last four months:
-turbo oil return line relocated from being 20cm long and melting on the exhaust, to a 1.3m line back into a new plug in the sump
-front whiteline sway bar
-turbo timer fitted
-engine bay detailed
-car kept nice and shiny
-new brake pads
-car is now kept under a cover to protect it from the weather
-screamer pipe has been plumbed back into exhaust
things to be done in a month's time when i finish uni:
-msd 3 coil blaster coil pack
-alternator belt
-rebuild front calipers with seal kits and pistons
-number plates going back to stock next week, before new custom ones are bought in late december (can't wait for them, not telling people until they are bought though haha)

bit of an update, the exhaust manifold is leaking considerably, and the harmonic balancer is all over the shop. This weekend I'll take the manifold off and replace the manifold gasket, as well as replacing the harmonic balancer. It will also be getting the prairie front brake upgrade, and the ET disk brakes and rear sway bar too, and new seats and door cards
as per the post on the forum's facebook page, the harmonic balancer bolt snapped off whilst still in the crank, and will cost me a fair bit to get removed next week.
Finally bought a smaller turbo, a t28 of some description on a custom steam pipe manifold, to replace the current gt2876. Must say I'm looking forward to hitting full boost around 4000rpm rather than just have the boost start to spool at those revs haha
garrett gt2876r with <66000k's will be for sale around xmas.

picked up a heap of parts from Dave (Spiff), including:
-JDM indicators
-series 2 taillights
-series 2 seats in great condition
-t28 turbo on a custom manifold (will likely use the manifold on the ET, as the Exa is externally gated and I don't want to have to rework parts of the exhaust as it means more money)

car got reregistered yesterday which was relieving, plus sorted out a few knocks coming from the intercooler piping and other things. got the little brother to paint the rocker cover and fit a new gasket yesterday as he's keen to learn about cars having just got his L's.
turns out the ignition coil isn't stock, it's a bosch 717 which was a pleasant surprise

went to replace the exhaust manifold gasket the other day as it has been blown for months and finally pissed me off enough to do something about. the custom manifold was a right c*** to remove, and when it did come off, turned out the middle exhaust stud pulled out a previous owner's poor attempt to repair a stripped thread in the head. Right, everything had to be put back on so the car could be driven to the gf's garage out of the predicted storms. fucking exa. everything off again the next day and after many failed attempts managed to rethread enough of the hole to get the stud back in. $20 gasket, more money on tools and plenty of scraped hands. worth it though, as once again the car is being boosted responsibly haha
