new Audi TT-RS

Post by Callumgw »

Thought you guys might like some spec's on the new Audi TT-RS, for turbo peoples like us these are interesting numbers:

The 2.5-litre engine is new, but Audi aficionados will remember the rally-bred Sport quattro of 1984 which ran a five-pot engine producing 225kW – a big number at that time. The new in-line five-cylinder engine, which is installed across the engine bay (transverse), goes back to the future by dispensing with an aluminium block, instead using a diesel-style vermicular-graphite cast-iron unit for its strength and light weight. The intake manifold has switchable flaps to improve the fuel/air mixture. Fuel is injected at up to 120 bar, creating swirl to cool the cylinders, allowing a higher compression ratio of 10:1. The turbocharger generates up to 1.2 bar of boost pressure, while fuel consumption comes in at 9.2L/100km.

[taken from Go-Auto News Sep 16 2009, it's a great free read that I'd recommend, even have Kiwi stuff in it! www.GoAutoMedia.com]

hehehehe i work for audi, the FSI injection system is very simular to a diesel set up as the injectors are mounted in the head next to the spark plug in a central position of the combustion camber its really cool, the fuel pressre they run is off tap and there a rumors that people have cracked the fuel line and nearly lost fingers

120psi is a fair bit and you gotta love direct injection. The only Issue I know about is that it means the fuel doesn't clean and cool the back of the inlet valve, so it can get a bit coked.

Which Audi you mech'ing at?

I was up talking with the guys at Doncaster BM (thinking of getting a 130i) and they have issues with it....not 'clogging' but certainly blacker and a lot more carbon that with injectors in intakes.

Hey, you guys got and S3 second hand atm?

60 bar eh? Not bad. Childs play tho.

Most current common rail big arsed diesels run at around 1500 bar.
Now were talking real mans fuel pressure! Thats right 1500 bar.
Up near 25,000psi

And the caterpillar Ascert truck engines turbo boost at just under 60psi all day.

What's the benifit of running over 100bar? Sure, the style of injection needs a crap load of pressure, but realy 25000psi.

I dont know M8, They do it tho. There must be a very valid reason why.
Even standard everyday diesels use 10,000 plus psi delivery pressures.

The higher the pressure, the finer the mist, the cleaner the burn.
The only thing I can think of.

Those are very interesting figures!

Besides, doesn't the idea behind the gasoline fuel injection system actually originate from experimental diesel technology from the early 1900s (pre-1950 era)?

I want rear or all-wheel drive 4 or more seats, not big (like C'dore'/F'con). Looking to spend no more than $50k.
