Yeah its all arc welded. And using a 15yr old non adjustable arc welder. I was using 2.5mm stainless rods. They are much more expensive than mild steel rods (A bit over $1 each rod). Thinner rods would have been better for the majority of the welds however i could only get my hands on the thicker rods for wholesale price.

Well after TAFE today i went down to my parents to finish off the car. Its not 100% but its running and most importantly the gearbox is very good. There is an exhaust leak from the front which im 90% sure is from the manifold to turbo flange. It didn't seem to clamp down flat when i was tightening it. So i might get it machined flat or try some exhaust gasket goo. The exhaust also sometimes hits the rear sway bar causing a 'clonk' sound. So a few little things to fix up but i'm pretty happy with it.

One thing i'm very suprised and pleased with is how quiet the exhaust is. It's much quieter than the old exhaust and not droney at all. I hardly notice that the cars revving more due to the n13 internals because it makes less noise (apart from the truck like sound coming from the front).

For your information i got a 3inch muffler and resonator from SMB exhaust.
i think the website is www.smb.net.au

Has anyone had any success with that RTV silicon exhaust gasket stuff?? I might give it a try. Failing that i'll get the flanges machined flat.

Well the head exhaust gaskets were shot and the turbo inlet was also so i replaced both. Its now pretty quiet but there was still a little noise coming from the front so i used a piece of garden hose and listened for where its coming from. Found a small section of a join in the manifold that i didn't weld (probably 5mm long). So i'll weld that up next weekend or when i can, but its not that loud anymore so i'm happy. It seems like the engine is running much smoother at low rpm. I think this is because with the big cam its now not getting as much exhaust gas reversion.

I could but not tonight, valentines day.
The new exhaust is actually a lot quieter than the old (at least inside the car). It still sounds nice on the outside from the rear though. I should get someone to drive the car down the street so i can hear what it actually sounds like. Its pretty mean on boost :)

Little update. Car is running great. All exhaust leaks are fixed and its now spooling up really quick. Gearbox is holding up fine and shifting much quicker and smoother than the old box ever did. I have a slight radiator leak so i have to keep topping it up. Its only running off wastegate actuator boost as it needs to be retuned for the new exhaust. But its definetly making more power now.

Tia (my fiance) took some studio photos of the car which when edited ill upload. Its amazing how the really bad paint etc came out.

That's sweet, you should contract yourself out to build exhausts for us all.

Lol it was one of those jobs you think will be easy but ends up taking forever!! I guess the exhaust bit after the dump pipe was pretty easy but making the manifold and dump pipe was difficult to get it all to fit.

I'm very happy with it atm i just want to add a flexi join in because it vibrates against the rear sway bar a bit.

Yep, I know what you'r esaying.
Still, it's looks the shit, and you say it's quieter so that's a good thing too. And it'll flow a whole lot better as well!

Although i think the main reason why i say it was such a hard job was the days i took off from work to build the exhaust was the hottest week we had. Temps ranged from 38-43degrees and i was out in a tin shed. If it was cooler it wouldn't have seemed as hard and uncomfortable thats for sure.

No i didn't do the other cooler piping and if the guy asked me i would have prefered him not to grind the welds back. I like the look with the welds there.

I went highmount because there was no other way to fit the merge collector in, unless it went really low but then i would have problems with the intercooler piping. Plus i like to be able to see the turbo :)

Its the same t28 as before.
