Gearbox Oil
Gearbox Oil
Had a bit of a look through the search function and couldn't really find much on this topic.
For those guys who are having success not breaking our 20 year old gearboxes, what oil are you using?
I know benny was raving on about a nulon additive which i will add also but what oil should i add that too? Brands and weight would be perfect thanks guys!

i'm using penrite 80w-85. i drove around on just new oil for a few days last week and i had some troubles getting 1st and reverse, and 2nd to 3rd sometimes crunched a bit. i put that nulon g70 stuff in again and wow its nearly perfect. it really is worth the <$15
I understand the need for conformity. Without a concise set of rules to follow we would probably all have to resort to common sense.
I changed from Castrol VMX to another brand (sorry can't remember what). It was the same weight oil but when the gearbox/car was cold it would grind a bit changing down gears.
So i dropped it out and put the castrol back in. No more grinding.

I would be surprised if there were indeed as much variation between oils as most seem to think. I use any correct weight I get my hands on.
But................................
I have heard that you can run tranny fluid as a replacement (opinions?)
or even better, jam a banana skin in there for a smoother shift, apparently.

the old banana in the diff and gearbox trick.

i pissed my self laughing. i had to tow him over 100k's home with my 180B!!!!not lauging.hot tip ....use up to spec oil, bananas just dont have the same viscosity.lol

it is true in some gearboxes u can run auto fluid but only where manufacturers recomend and some holden boxes u run 15w/40 engine oilI would be surprised if there were indeed as much variation between oils as most seem to think. I use any correct weight I get my hands on.
