Valve seat recession protection
Hi guys. My (rather elementary) question for today is; is it necessary to use valve seat recession protection fluid with our E series engines?
I'm fairly sure mine's an unleaded version of the E series engine, but still. I'm just being frustrated by having to pour extra stuff into the tank every time I 'fill her up'.
If it is vital for the engine, I will continue to do so, of course.
Thanks!

in all honesty dude these cars are shit but they have so much character, are fun and go fairly well when running right. we still play around with these things because they are a fun addictive little shitbox! - Ash

It's not absolutely necessary as they are unleaded engines even though they were run on leaded in Australia.

Paul is correct Japan went unleaded in 76 so all our E series are unleaded no need for lead replacement crap

Great to hear! Saves me a lot of money to skip that crap! Thanks guys!
One thing confuses me though... if all E series engines are unleaded, then why are people talking about leaded and unleaded E15ET engines? I know about the piston differences, and about the O2 sensor which came with the later 'unleaded' E15ET:s. But that doesn't quite explain it to me.
Cheers,
Jan

From what i know all pree 85 e15et motors need the goop and all non turb e15 motors need the the goop anythiun over that doesnt. but on that you dont really need to use it so long as you dont get pinging/knocking it should be fine as really under neath all the parts are the same mate, in my na e15 i had i both used it and didnt use it and had no issues, so its up to the user reallyTurboZ.Dude wrote:Great to hear! NO E SERIES ENGINE NEEDS VALVE PROTECTION!!!!!
Every engine which originated in Japan post 1976 is designed to USE unleaded fuels.
The reason guys refer to the engines as leaded/unleaded is to differentiate between the large number of small changes which were made at that time on them.
The ONLY differences between the parts in the engine leaded v's unleaded are pistons and the ball + spring for the non water/oil heat exchanger.

The additive is for the valve seats in cast iron heads. Therefore any alloy-headed engine doesn't need it. Unleaded engines with iron heads have hardened valve seats.
Aside from that, the main difference between leaded and unleaded cars is the presence of a catalytic converter which can't tolerate leaded fuel.

That answers my question perfectly! I'll be sure to keep this in mind next time someone mentions leaded/unleaded E15ET:s.
That's interesting, didn't know leaded fuel can foul up cats. Thanks m8!Kimmo wrote:Aside from that, the main difference between leaded and unleaded cars is the presence of a catalytic converter which can't tolerate leaded fuel.

Although you don't have to use the lubricant if you have it lying around you may as well. I used to use it in my old BMW as it was a little quieter with it.

Well, I think it does reduce performance a bit. My engine runs better without that fluid, now that I've been driving without it for a few days. If there is any of that fluid left in the tank, it has to be almost nothing because I filled up the tank a few days ago, 40 liters, and didn't pour any VSRP fluid into the tank. Our tanks are around 47-48 liters in size IIRC.
All things considered, I think I'll dispose of the fluid instead. But thanks for the idea!

It won't make any difference to performance if you run it or not. I would dare say that it won't have any ill effects on the engine if it is run for a couple of months at a time either. But as there is zero gain from it in our engines, pass it on to someone else who may need it.

Ok, I may be imagining things. Or then the engine is running better because of weather changes. These carbs are sensitive to weather changes. I'll be glad to get rid of the carb setup within a couple of years.
I don't know anyone who owns a car with a cast iron head... otherwise I would be glad to donate the bottle to somebody.
