Does N13 Power Steering Rack fit our N12s? Need to know ASAP

Post by CETFLY »

Well boys, just as the title asks.....

Im rebuilding my entire setup again (all custom) but am sick of no power steering for the last 12years Ive owned these cars....

Is it possible to fit the N13 steering rack to the N12 and also does the pump bolt on to the block/engine mount support section?

Need to know asap

Cheers

I recall gettu mentioning this:
gettu wrote:i think , that a N13 (with E16 engine, the GA-series will not do) should have the right kind of steering rack , a suitable pump, mounts, piping and so on. or if not, the B11 one will do ( PS much more popular in these, atleast here in Finland)
And an extra bonus is that the N13 rack should have half a turn less from end to end... the standard steering rack on the N12 has a silly gearing.

i trial fitted an n13 exa rack to an et shell and it bolted up.
didnt test the steering column spline though and not sure if the n12 pumps are compatible.

you can get power steering pump off of an n12 astra i believe?
n13 ones are different and wouldnt bolt up without custom brackets.

if you have intercooler piping or a high mount turbo the n12 pump may get in the way also.

If you want a hot powered rack, why not just toddle down to your local speedway goodies shop and pickup a universal powered quickrack. designed for speedway sedans.
Any power steering pump will do. You can even get electric servo power assist and variable ratio adapters for those who truly want to experiment.
With a little massaging and some imagination, youll end up with prolly about 1 turn lock to lock less than finger light. Will steer much like a go-kart really but lighter!

Think like this, make an simple adapter bracket that bolts into the stock steering rack brackets that the new rack bolts directly onto. How hard is that?
Some custom long tie rods and your done.

Just sneeze when driving down the highway and youll easily faceplant yourself into the armco such is the liveliness of this kind of rack!

Make a 'rex feel like a tank. You want fast and powered steering racks? I give them to you! Stop dicking around with half a turn less clobber and get serious.

Oh, btw, if the N13 rack turns half a turn less AND wheels turn the same amount as stock, then its going to feel heavier, no matter what youve been told. Dont suffer any delusions of grandeur here.

You mean that a N13 powered rack is heavier to turn than a N12 non-powered rack? That's interesting!

Ah, I see! Thought it sounded a bit strange, but as I'm not an expert I couldn't guess what you were trying to say. And my name is Jan.

Panda,
My forearms are OK, I want a faster one. not some girlie ET grandma hatch driving wimp light rack!

but seriously, I don't drive it daily or parallel park it, and under throttle the front is light enough.
