Been slaving away for at least 3 hrs with green scotchbrite, and 240-600 wet and dry on the water pump face and its making literally no difference. many of the other surfaces i managed to get nice and clean but this one isnt cutting it. Is there a magic chemical that will make it easy to clean the face up? or is there a recommended power tool investment? Cheers

Cast iron is hard shit! Be careful not to warp the mating surface, or your water pump will never seal again.
The best way would be to use a body file, or 1/3 sheet sanding block with fresh 120 grit paper, just make doubly sure you take of material evenly.

Razor blade to get all the big left over shit off, then emery paper to clean it up

Yup.
Youl spend half a lifetime trying to bring that surface back to "clean" by hand as you are trying to remove pitting/rusting of the iron.

Do above and let some sealant take care of the rest.

The surface will look like it still needs cleaning, but rub your finger over the surface & it will actually be smooth

mmm surface is smooth when running over with the finger. E is right the rest is just the pitting/rusting of iron. Ill go pick up some sealant to help get the job done. Thanks Guys.
