For all the diesel brains out there, I know that commercial trucks use comp braking, and I was given a very loose explain about it 15years back, but how does it actualy work?

Exhaust brake is just a strangler valve in the exhaust pipe.
Turns the engine into a compressor.

A "Jake" engine brake usually hydraulically "fires" an extra exhaust valve at TDC on compression stroke.
So engine looses power by compressing, and then looses more by having to drag the piston back down without the help of compressed air in there.
