Been slaving away for at least 3 hrs with green scotchbrite, and 240-600 wet and dry on the water pump face and its making literally no difference. many of the other surfaces i managed to get nice and clean but this one isnt cutting it. Is there a magic chemical that will make it easy to clean the face up? or is there a recommended power tool investment? Cheers

Cast iron is hard shit! Be careful not to warp the mating surface, or your water pump will never seal again.
The best way would be to use a body file, or 1/3 sheet sanding block with fresh 120 grit paper, just make doubly sure you take of material evenly.

The surface will look like it still needs cleaning, but rub your finger over the surface & it will actually be smooth
