Replacement Plugs for ECU

Post by fitzmooney »

Hi,
Has anybody managed to source replacement plugs for the standard ECU to hopefully cure the intermittent connection problems permanently?
Cheers,
Mike

I just bought a handful of those individual plugs which have their own flyleads for connecting crap to computer motherboards. You cant use the "gangs" of them as the pin spacing is different between the ECU and computer motherboard pins. The pin size is the same tho.
Easy, cheap and cures the dramas totally.

I have already checked their web pages, but I can't find anything with fly leads.
Would you have a part number?
Thanks

Nope! You dont even have to get that funky Panda.

Those flyleads are ready setup to go and all you have to do is splice them onto the existing loom.

They are worth almost nothing and come in plenty of colours as well.

I can't help thinking a tweak with some needlenose pliers is all that's required to restore proper contact...

Never had the drama myself though

or new pins/sockets into the old plastic plugs...(haven't tried but I'd assume they use the standard spring locating setup that can be sprung out and replaced....)

I spent hours attempting to remove those pesky little connectors/sockets and never even got close. So i simply cut the cunts off and replaced them.

Cost me prolly 5 dollars and about 30 minutes work.

i succeeded extracting contacts out of the ecu plug.
i simply cut out a small strip out of my spare looms plug at a unused pin to see where and how the contacts are locked in there.
with this information i took a piece of copper wire and made it a extraction/unlocking tool by filing and hammering it.

i don't think that the contacts are standard parts, i couldn't find any.
maybe you guys have better chances with all the efi-shops around?

i will take some pictures when i'm in the garage again...

i think i was using something else than copper wire back then as the extraction tool for this application, was mixing things up a little.
maybe a modified watchmaker's screwdriver.
i couldn't find it as i was in a hurry, will have a closer look when i have more time.

ok guys here is my guide

i was using a watchmakers screwdriver(1mm shaft), it had a broken off tip. a piece of wire (not too soft) should work also i guess.
i slightly bent the tip and shaped it similar to a screwdriver blade by hammering it.
Image
maybe the tip shouldn't be getting to wide (1.5mm max?), so probably filing will be necessary.

the plug should be locked in place somehow, i carefully(!) placed it in a vice.
Image

your tool has to enter a hole between 2 pin-rows like this, it should intrude about 15mm.

Image

with a little patience and after a few tries, the contact should be unlocked this way....

still this is no solution to the contact problems as i think those contacts won't be available in the aftermarket?
and a special crimping tool would also be required for the job...

maybe some tweaking, as kimmo wrote, would be good enough to get rid of contact problems for some time.
i even thought about gold-plating the original contacts using one of those diy-galvanize sets on ebay(cheap), but i'm not sure if this would work out??
