if the switch stays closed, the car would definitely not run above 2000revs(or up to 3500, depening on coolant temp).
a randomly shorting switch could cause severe problems i guess.

but then again, it wouldn't backfire because the fuel would be shut off....

lets say, the error codes can get you a hint of what is not right with the system, when you know your stuff. they definitely do not tell you how to fix a problem, like change this part and everything is ok again. so nothing for the modern mechanics who can only plug in their diag-computer and instal...

Just a minute here. Error codes are just that. Error codes. The ECU has logged the error, perhaps just once due to...shit..... a multitude of issues. on some nissan ecus(e.g. n13 with e16i) code 33 means oxy sensor.
do you have the normal european cherry turbo setup in your car? (except for A/C )

i think this is an error in the manual, the resistor on page el-8 is more likely the one for the rev-counter, i.e. it doesn't lead to the ECU.
there is one connection to the ecu, but it is coming from the positive side of the coil (=igntion on-switch).
