Gee they are ugly! No wonder the fill the diff with metal filings after a time.
Still, you gotta use what you gotta use.

Damo, is it basically two pieces of rectangle alloy, holes machined through the centre (two ways) and 4 buckets drilled out for some springs, sandwhich it all together and jam it between the spider gears?

That'll be it.

I spotted a picky of one in one of the Greek 'members rides' a couple of months back and thought "Is that it!!" Rolling Eyes Fark me, and 'they' want $300 or so for them from the states!! bugger that, I'll make one. If it works, great. If it doesn't, well, I tried.

It wasn't till recently that I re-saw yours in that diff pic, and remembered that you had one in the car from a while ago. I keep meaning to take a couple of pics of the bits I have, to add to the thread, but one thing gets in the way of another.
I ended up busting open an old clutch pressure plate and using a 16mm and 20mm hole saw to cut the buckets, it seems to work ok, but I will definitely need to use a drill press to get the holes perpendicular and in better alignment.
In that pic of yours, the springs seem massive compared to having the ones I have in my hand, but the reality is that they are a similar size to what I have when you take into account the size of the alloy blocks!

Yeah I was going to say, those plates look like standard 10 or 15mm bar rolled bar stock that has been chopped to about the correct length and then channels milled into it to house the springs.

How do they then install it? I assume they pre-assemble the unit and then just whack it in there with a big f-off hammer? Its a bit agricultural, but I don't have a better idea at this stage.........so yeah.

I don't think you could use aluminium because the shaving would clog in the gearsets, etc. like a grinding wheel.

I guess mild steel isnt a bad choice because its fairly durable, but will wear quicker than the hardened spider gears........so its probably not that bad of a choice. Plus the filings could be caught be a magnet.

How

It definantly doesn't 'look' like an alloy anyway....but I could be wrong.

Darren.

I thought that it looked a little steelish. Figured it was anodized.

I'm sure the ones from the states are alloy.

And this. Scroll to 01mar

Hello Guys

after a longggg rebuilt and update of my project...ihave been away for a while but daily im visiting the forum....so i saw this thread and i say why not say my experience of those phantom grips...callum he is a good friend and he is the guy that help me to get those phantom grip plates into my gear box...so my experience is from my engine that was alsmost stock (ic and exhaust inlet and some other parts) and keep me on traction very good but i was running also toyo's semi slick's r888 so i can't say for sure that the good grip of my car was only from the phantome ones...th other thing is that was ok to park it into my garage which is quiet difficult to park in and i test it with wet tarmac ..and was impressed really cause that day was raining a lot...so i think is good value for money... Cool if you have any questions let me know.....
