s-cargo removing flywheel pulley?
s-cargo removing flywheel pulley?
since i was tearing down the top end a friend helpfully suggested I replace the timing belt while I was at it, "Sure, that sounds like a great plan", says I.
so after ordering the belt and gubbins I realise that I now have to remove the flywheel pulley to get at the tensioner which is hidden behind a cover obscured by said pulley.
the manual assumes you have the engine out of the car, which is not the case for me. so how in the hell do you lock off the crank to allow you to undo the 19mm bolt that retains the flywheel pulley?
The head is still off so I have access to the pots

Long breaker bar on the 19mm nut, rest the bar on a paint tin or block of timber, jack stand ect ect, hit the engine starter for a fraction of a second, and the nut comes lose.

Select 3rd gear, friend stands on the brake peddle, do up the nut. From memory the nut only needs 50ish N/m so no problem with the gearbox taking the strain.

will have to be a mishmash. can't get at the flywheel teeth as the engine is still in the car. can't put it in 3rd cos it's an auto
will bung it in D and see how I go, if all else fails I'll do what I did for the water pump pulley, a pair of decent vice grips combine with some soft jaws (3mm MDF) and hold pulley in place. go team bodge!

Not too sure that works well. I have had two come undone after being done up within a couple weeks of being assembled in the past, only make that mistake once (or twice ).zoomzoom wrote:By rights it should tighten up to on its own
When I did mine I was told too tight it up as much as I could and it would do the rest it self when the engine starts
Its the way I did it , it ain't come off

What HE said and same experience.
In my case the loose pulley was destroyed and the snout of the crank damaged.
Unbolt the starter so you can sprag the starter ring gear with a big fuckoff screwstick and tighten the bolt to spec.
Do it right the first time.

HA! I've said it once... and I'll say it again... This site is awesome. I couldn't think of an easy way to get at the flywheel end of the engine without removal... starter motor, of course!tassuperkart wrote:Unbolt the starter so you can sprag the starter ring gear with a big fuckoff screwstick and tighten the bolt to spec.
