thick white smoke question

Post by dexi_styles »

Does anyone have an idea of what could be causing my thick white smoke...

Ok so I got the new Turbo. Started the car, clear fumes running on all 4 cylinders. After several 30 sec runs at 3k (not sure why, prob cos the Microtech isn't tuned) I let it go for a few seconds more and it started to pour out with white smoke. It was still running on 4 cylinders.

Now I wanna know if its a blown head gasket, too much oil in the engine causing a pressurized oil return... I don't know guys... the engine was fine when I took it out now it's pouring out white smoke. I know its not the turbo as its brand new, new head gasket, the head has been fine n rebuilt bout 2+ years

I wanna know where to look or check first.

Cheers,
Dexi

What happened the very last time you ran the engine in this car, BEFORE you put any new turbos and crap on.
Like what caused you to have it not running for a long time?

Upgrades mate.
I had to change the engine as my old one was fucked.
I took this engine out of another car bit o drive the other car around. No smoke then, no issue with the sparks or anything. It was a fine engine from what I could tell.

I did put my head on this engine as I knew the condition if the head & it has the stage 2 cam in it.
Nothing else has changed
But I ran out of money plus the turbo swapping has pushed it back for me.

reason I ask Dex is if the engine was rooted enough to throw oil down the dump and into the muffler/s, it will burn thivk white smoke for quite somne time until the oil is burnt out of the mufflers.

This can actually last months in very bad cases. Older Mazdas used to pop the diaphragm in the automatic tranny proportioning valve and would suck ATF straight thru the engine and soak the mufflers.
If this ever happened we would just replace the entire exhaust system as the smoking could go on for MONTHS everytime the mufflers got hot!

As PAC has mentioned, check your breather system as well as this is also a leading cause of hassles.

Also, on a more sinister not, NEVER discount the new turbo being knackered right from the first startup.
Happens.

This amounr of smoke will be a rsult from a lot of oil. Check ur turbo in/out pipes and dump for oil residue.

Ok so its oil spilling in the exhaust. The pic above is the old turbo but same lay out. I don't have a air filter on yet. Waiting for the much to make a pipe. Also I only have the dump. It stops just under the car, waiting to get cash to finish it all. I'm gonna rip the mani off n see where the oil is coming from. I have notice its leaking out the exhaust turbine. So I hope it's not the turbo. But I also hope its not the engine. It's gotta be one.

Could a blown head gasket do this? Oh well one why to find out.
Off with the mani, then off with the head if its coming from the engine. I'll clean the mani out while its off and start again.

Does anyone suggest a solution to wash out the oil from the manifold?
Cheers for the help

Just lift the turbo off. if there is oil in the manifold then you could safely say engine.
If its dry in there you have turbo dramas and the turbine side seal is buggered to begin with. That would suck..

This one is left field but are you positive that the oil drain is actually draining. Like did you happen to make a gasket and forget to poke the hole out??...
I had to ask that but just in case.

Sounds a bit left field but its a thought. The oil drain has enlarged bolt holes to allow both size oil drains available come to think about it...
I'll look at the mani and the cylinders to see if its coming from the turbo or engine, then I can rule it to fucked engine or oil drain. If its not the engine I'll get the drain pipe made better, I'll prob do that regardless.

Cheers E, I'll look into it.
