Hey all, Last week i pulled my plugs out and found this:

The order left to right is from the timing case back to the gearbox.

Then i swapped them all around so the fourth plug went into the second cylinder( from timing case) And also put in a new dizzy cap, rotor button, tightened the actuator, and actually put an air filter in it (didnt have one when i bought it) drove for a week heres the result:

Anyone know what this means? They dont look right......
Cheers, James.

Ohhhh, I see the problem. Champion plugs!

Besides that, doesn't look like a drama.

They just look a little dirty.

I'd imagine your face would be a tad dirty too if it were exposed to a few million explosions...

Sounds exactly like the one I got out of my old carby-engine. The whole tip of the spark plug had exploded! I still wonder what went wrong when that happened...

Judging by all those different shades of colour in the second cut, Id be having my fuel injectors cleaned and flow tested.
Mixture distribution looks up the shit.

Also, comparing the 2 results is close to useless unless the driving conditions were exactly the same after the 2 cuts. Plug colours change very quickly and the only true way to do a cut is to blast it flatout to max revs holding it back hard on the brake and immediately shutting it down with the key and coast in neutral to a stop.
That will give a good cut but does the turbo no favours at all!!!!!!

So you have to recreate the conditions fairly closely each time with the barest minimum of idling time before shutting it down. A fairly risky proposition if your not careful.

Idle conditions will result in sooty plugs very quickly no matter what due to overly rich mixtures needed to maintain good idle and too cool combustion chamber temps to clean away that black shit.

The first cut shows good colour on 1, 2 & 3 but early signs of detonation on 4 hence that distinctive greying on the insulator

The second cut looks like the engine was running on idle or poking around slowly or just started and run from cold before the plugs were pulled.
