Baz's 180sx (another one)

Post by baz »

Hey, It's been a while since I've been on here, from memory my last "show us your ride" on here was my white my97 wrx, Since then I've had a vp commodore ute with vs front end, 2 honda crx's and now I'm back to another riced up 180sx, Reason I downgraded from the wrx to the ute was simply because I was into moto, And my partner wanted the car, so I gave the car to her & sold her mirage and got myself the ute & crx's etcc..Anyways funnily enough me & my partner now have the same car...Yes I said it, We have the same fucking car, No idea how it happened but it did lawlz..So my 180 has a few mods, Such as:

Power fc
hks gt-ss turbo
740cc injectors
3" zorst
cusco coilovers
cams
tomei adjustable cam gears
front, middle and rear strut braces
harness bar
rota rb wheels
flared rear guards
origin front and rear bar
carbon fiber bonnet & headlight covers, along with rear center garnish
aftermarket taillight and front indicators
few gauges, oil pressure, boost and water temp
r32 gtr front seats
Nardi steering wheel
custom catch can & cooler piping
Z32 afm
engine dampening brace
head shielded area around turbo and dump pipe
+ other odds & ends I've missed out, The car originally had a 2871R and it made 250kw atw's but was massively laggy, So now it's got the hks gt-ss

Had some recent drama with the car, The catch can was filling up awfully quick, So further investigation, we did a compression test, results were:

Cyl 1:120psi
cyl 2: 105psi
cyl 3: 105psi
cyl 4: 40psi ....Yes 40 :\

Pulled the head off & the car had been running so rich it has washed the bore down so it was all glazed..Head went in yesterday to get machined & to get the valves checked to make sure they weren't shagged, But got a call & their all fine, So I've got hold of another block so I'll be swapping blocks and putting my head on the new engine & giving the block to my boss as he has a 2.2l stroker SR..So it all worked out all well & good, Should have the car back up and running within a week or 2..So now it's time for pictures, Some of you from tassie may have seen the car on dvds or even in person as it was "chase car" for the tasmanian drifting series a few times..

finally got something half decent. well done chap
I understand the need for conformity. Without a concise set of rules to follow we would probably all have to resort to common sense.

Yeah it's quite nicer than what I've had, as I tend to buy stock cars & mod them, & not always in the best way :\ ..Much easier to to buy them already done & especially when it's been someones car that you know, I got the car from my boss & he got it when it was bog stock & has had it for 6 years, But wanted to sell it & keep the car in the family so that's how I obtained it, Picked up the head for it today, valves were checked & were spot on along with it being machined, head gasket has been brought & oils along with exhaust manifold gasket aswell, Only thin I'm waiting on is the external gate & screamer to be welded onto the manifold....Fark yeah GATE!

So, Just put the engine back together & got it back in the car, & my gosh, The thing farking GOES!...such a better car to drive now..Come to find out when I was squizzing thru the hand controller, the afm was set to a 90mm v8 afm, soon as i switched it to a vg30 z32 the thing just idled heaps better and it got rid of the flat spots & miss firing, did a few highway runs & the car pulls very smooth without any surging or hickups, just need to have a much about with the cold start setting with how much fuel to dump in from 50+ degreess and 80+ degrees, going to get it checked over just to be sure it's not running lean, but so far so good, Would be putting out around 220kw atw's or slightly more, running 18psi, dropped the rev limited slightly..another thing i need to change is the cranking when its cold..

So I got the 180 tuned a week ago..It was running rich down low & lean up top or it was the other way around...Can't remember now but anyways since the tune I've put in a full bolt in roll cage..

Also had a little incident recently with the back drivers wheel..Was giving the car so much loved limiter action when i felt the as end wobby whilst i was sideways on a concealed private road so i then slowed down and the wheel shot right past me..Turned out the "RAYS" wheel nuts aren't so strong..The nuts stripped them self right of the stud..So I thought rather than just buying new better nuts I'd install some longer wheel studs for when I get some wider wheels or spacers down the track & also some geometry under the car for the drift day

So, Since the new engine was put in & a retune was done..I have yet again fucked another engine..Catch can filling up & dip stick pipping up..Same deal as last time it happened..Compression tested it..125psi along all 4..Drop a bit of oil down & it jumped to 175psi as it should..So pointed to rings..Your probably thinking how did this happen if the car had been retuned?..suspicion is pointing to the tune being to rich as it washed down the bore making it glazey like last time..OR it may have something to do with leaking injectors..But very unlikely as all cylinders were the same as each other..I'm getting them cleaned & flow tested just to be sure but seems to be pointing to the tune..The amount of fuel in the sump as amazing..Soon as we checked the level of the oil it had about 1.5L to much in it..But since the engine had been put in and fluids topped up i hadn't touched the oil..So we thought yeah has to be fuel..Started stripping down the engine and all through the engine was a milky type substance (like when you blow a head gasket) ..But it smelt like fuel..So we kept pulling the engine down, Soon as we pulled the sump of it just reaked of fuel..So everything is apart and was dropped of at the machine shop to get the following done..

Hone bore
fit valve stem seals
machine head
clean up random odds & ends
measure up certain bits
clean up cams

+ a few other nick nacks

So far I will be replacing rings, big & main bearings, rear main, valve stem seals, fresh tune & pro automotive, highmount manifold with external gate ocourse, head gasket ofcourse, all other gaskets as you do & so on..Now I know what I'm dealing with once it's all back together so then I can book in for a run in tune..do 1,000 kms then get another tune :) ..I'm trying to offload the hks gt-ss to fund a new t3/t4 turbo..I would like to see if TAS would sell me his T66..Bit laggy but still make good power..I'll keep you informed on how it all goes

Been a few weeks since updated..Engine has been at the machinist for a bit over a week..everything is done as I mentioned in my last post, I have sold my HKS & will be putting pops (tas) T66 on my SR from his Nav..Injectors came back fine, Only one slight thing wrong tho..They are meant to be a Nismo 740cc but when tested are only a 700cc..No big deal really..Spoke to the bloke whose tuning my car & he said he will run my car in on his dyno then crank some decent numbers from it..Hoping for around 250-260ish atw's on around 16-18psi..Engine is being assembled this week & will be on the dyno in 2 weeks time
