N12 Pulsar
Hello
Not exactly sure if this is the right place to be, but I have a 1983 N12 Pulsar. Nothing like the ones here, though...
My mother bought it new, and has been in the family now all that time. Everyone's driven it at some point, even my brother's kids.
It's a (pretty gutless) 1.5lt auto, but has been a reliable old thing. Both parents are gone now, so it's mine. It just passed the 200,000km mark, and the mechanics always compliment it's condition.
The paintwork is pretty crap (the usual places: bonnet and roof), but apart from that, it's all in pretty decent nick. Mum was a slow driver, so was dad, and so am I. Slow, as it not thrashing the guts out of the thing.
It's just had it's first major problem, a blown head gasket, so I'm using the time to replace a few of the older, wearing parts, like the water pump and thermostat housing, etc.
Just trying to source parts now, gaskets and such. I know of a wreckers with two, and I'm hoping one has an electronic distributor (already nabbed a spare rear hatch...got it dirt cheap).
I've been doing some decent trips, especially to the Snowys for some fly fishing (I live in the Blue Mountains, NSW), and I'll be doing a lap of Tassie shortly.
To make life easier, had a carpenter mate build a bed for it - take out the front seat (5 mins), remove the back seat back rest (1 min) and lay the bed out, fixed at the back with a bolt, and supported in two places.
It gives me 230cm of head space. With an inflatable mattress, very comfy, and allows one to stop and sleep anywhere.
I'm currently designing a mossy net for the thing. The photo shows a basic design - going to cut up some netting and make one to fit.

Welcome "Home" Paul.
A would like to see the mozie net complete.
Is that a Gregory's Workshop manual you have?? I still have my original Gregory's from when I had my old N/A Pulsar.
Good luck with the project.
Cheers,
Dex

Thanks, everyone.
Yeah, it's a bit of fun.
I could have had a Toyota Camry (in excellent nick), but chose the Pulsar. Yup, I knew it was the er, less logical, decision at the time, but then, where's life without some passion, or doing something different, eh?
Yes, it is a Gregory's workshop manual...also got a service manual, much more detailed, with superb exploded views of the engine, transmission, suspension, etc.
It's actually a great little car. Slow as a slug, mind, but it handles 100km/h easy (as it should), but does not like hills...so, I just move over to the left, slow down, and enjoy the views (I have to admit, a turbo would be nice on those hills...)
As for fuel consumption, it averages 7-7.5.5lt/100km with normal driving, and 6.5lt/100km on the highway. I've even hit a flat 6lt/100km.
The mossy net is the next thing to add...I'll set it up so my whole body is covered. At present, just the top half is protected. It may need a couple of nets, but will be interesting.
I'm amazed at some of the mods to N12s here, fantastic stuff. I always admire a job done well.
I do have one change I'd like to make; a comfy, supportive seat. Any suggestions?

Well, the N12 EXA Turbo has very very comfy seats. Highly recommended! They bolt on right away! Probably the best factory seat available for the Nissan N12 Series.paul w wrote:I do have one change I'd like to make; a comfy, supportive seat. Any suggestions?

Thanks for that, the seat looks great, with lots of support. I'll search around and see if any are available.
Kid nismo: it's Tantangara Reservoir, in the Snowy Mtns. Fabulous body of water, and the dam and earth works around it are amazing.
The Snowy Mtns has some great driving (and especially motorcycling), with (generally) roads, little traffic, and awesome scenery.
I do a bit of fly fishing (trout) and have been using the N12 to get around, and checked Tantangara out on my last trip there. Here are some more places:
Lake Lyall (Lithgow)
Three Mile Dam (Snowys)
Eucumbene River

I wonder if Nissan didn't do enough enduro testing with the bigger poppers in the turbos.
