The Turbos T25 and T28

Can we see the difference.
Image

Image

Yes, the T25 is cleaner,
It was reco'd about 8 years ago, then sat in a box until now.

I know now that the T28 was not blown, but I would of down sized it anyway,
I don't want big power, I would proffer it to be more usable/drivable.

Youve pretty much answered ur own questions but ANY air that makes its way into the engine MUST come thru the AFM.

That PCV connection is at the wrong end of the rocker cover. There is a lot of oil splash and vapours flying about inside the rocker cover see?
The connections at each end are baffled and have wire mesh in there to condense oil out of the vapour that is pulled thru but im guessing that there must be a difference in the two baffles as they look significantly different. Might be wise to check that some bozo has possibly gutted the rocker cover out and you pulling splaed oil into that vent. reconnect everything back to stock.

Catch cans in a PCV vented engine are visual wank and do nothing.
However, if you like bling cluttering your engine bay then poke it into the vent line between the rocker cover and the AFM.
Better still just dont connect it at all as thats about all the use youll get from one lmao!

Are you sure there is no oil down thru the exhaust system burning out?
Try disconnecting the dump and running it to confirm the smoke is actually from the engine.

Hey Samual, yes please, that would really help, some shots (closer) of the motor (bits) would really be useful, so I can follow where the hoses go,
Thanks

PS I love the way your overflow goes, as I had to get my radiator reco'd, had 2 big holes where the turbo hit. I got them to flip mine around too.
Looks so much cleaner, thanks for that creative idea.

Hey E, That seems to have done the smoking bit.
The dodgy bastards not only got that wrong, but when I had a look at the hose with the PCV,
I found out that its not a PCV, but a brass connection, one side for clamping and the other had a tread on it.
And the hose was full of oil.
I found a PCV and put it in. Also at a quick look, the breather (at idle) near the dizzy seems to blow out (+)
and the one near the 710 cap seams to suck in (-).

Anyway there was an immediate difference, in 30 sec the smoke stopped pluming out.
Its still smoking a little, Like you said, it will do that for a while until it burns off.

I am still a little concerned about plumbing the breather back to the turbo inlet,
just if there was so much oil in that pipe before, and I do that, will it send oil though the turbo.
I figure that I will leave it for a few days, until the oil burns off,
and if in that time no oil has accumulated in that pipe (in any real quantity) then I'll put it in.

There still seems to be oil coming out of the turbo somewhere,
and when I listen carefully I can hear a exhaust leek around the turbo,
but that is for tomorrow.
I am happy that I think I got the smoke sorted.

Thanks guys for all the help

Nah any oil in the hose you can just rinse out no?
Most of the time, air trvels TOWARDS the engine from that pipe and the only time it will go back the other way is under boost and any oil will just pass thru the inlet and into the motor...where its sposed to go.

Donr worry about it.

**** UPDATE ****
SO been working on the Prairie, wanting to finish it off soon.
And just finished the last of the mod jobs....
The roof lining.....

As I put in that electric sunroof (From a 2007 camry)
the old lining just would not work, not too much of a shame!!!
It did not look that crash hot.
And as the original camry one is crap, made of soft foam that just falls apart,
I had to do some big mods to it,
Plus it was about 70cm short.

The first thing I did was fibre glass it, to stop it from crumbling away.

The before trial fit.

Image

Then I needed to make an extension for the lining.

Finding the lining I wanted was much harder than I thought.
I spent a day calling upholsterers, and no one had a colour I wanted.
every local one only had grey, dark grey, light grey, more grey, and ...grey,
a few types of cream and some black.
FYI, I got quotes of $650-$800 to do the job....
Anyway found one guy that has some old red laying around...
but not enough for the whole job....
But still. I went that way.... Figure I'll do the back section in black.
Answer do it in 2 sections.....

The back was easy, a curved piece of ply

Image

Then the next bit was to recover the sunroof slide,
I thought that leaving it grey would be silly,
and doing it later means pulling the whole thing down. Now is better.
Image

Then Getting it smooth enough so you dont see the bumps.
Hint, from the old days, sometimes instead of filler (bog) you can
use plaster, it is easier to work, shape, sometimes you cant use the force to sand the bog.

Image

And as my luck sucks....
The red was 10cm short. So did some improv on the last bit, under the visors.
Image

Fitted
Image

Image

I'll cover the visors in the future.
New visors have vanity mirrors with lights and extra sun blockers in the middle.

Image

Now I get to fit it back up....

Oh there is one last mod...ish thing, the back, I decided not to put the third row seats back in, Instead building storage...
For 2 large batteries, space saver wheel, amps and subs and stuff, also want some sort of fold / flip out matters that can go over the seats when folded flat

Getting closer,
Still have the crack in the turbo manifold,
and still blowing some smoke...
But I'll get to that stuff at the end.

I just want One complete Duck sitting there LOL

Just looking at the guards
And put the inner guard in to have a look.

You can really see how much difference it makes.
The wheel rubs on the inner.

Well worth doing it....
Tones of extra room for more rubber.
That is lowered with 16"s
Image

A reminder of how the prairie looked before... NO NO it not that ugly... Right
Image
Anyway.... I am finishing the front....
and am looking at painting the grill...
so what color, it's a thing for me.
Cant imagine it black or white looking good.
I photoshoped both black and white.
and did not like either...
Any suggestions.

Nice work on the roof buddy!
I think that a white grill would look OK, kinda keep it all smooth to the eye.

I'd say light grey, slightly lighter than the original paint.. would match the rims as well as the headlights. :)

Love the build so far.. hell of a lot of work gone into it thats for sure.

As for the grill, id go with a flat or low gloss silver/grey.. think one was suggested in a photochop few pages back?

Also nice work with the bonnet. no dramas clearing the engine then?
Too much is never enough..

Thanks,
It has been a real adventure.... learning curve.... Nightmare....
The idea was so simple in the beginning.... Get an ugly box (Prairie), fix it up a little and then throw a turbo motor into it...
If it was only that simple.
Everything is close enough so you can modify it to work, but then again, you have to modify everything....

I often think for the amount of work I put in, I could of had a sweet 34 ford.
Then Again, there is only one Ugly Duck Turbo Prairie... So if unique counts.....

I got to say, Off the top of my head, at least it was cheap...
I'm pretty sure that the whole thing, car and build cost me under 5k.

BlackTalon_88 wrote:Also nice work with the bonnet. no dramas clearing the engine then?
None at all, has plenty of room under there.

**** UPDATE ****

Closer and closer...
Almost to the point of getting it registered.
Spent the day making a large battery box for 2 large batteries
Main and auxiliary (In the back cabin)

As the seats fold to a bed, I plan on taking road trips in it,
and the last thing I want to have is a flat battery on the side of the road....

So, I made it from wood, tomorrow I will fibreglass it.
Cut A hole for an old vacuum cleaner hose, and now its vented outside the body

Also played around with the spare tyre,
got a space saver, hoping that it will fit in the factory location.
Bad luck for me, as with the twin exhaust it wont fit in.
Live an learn, maybe in the future when I have the money to get an exhaust place to make a new one,
I'll get it to fit there, I would not be buggered to try to remake it to fit now, you need a pipe bender.
Lucky the space saver, with some mucking around fits under the back seats.
So I made a carpet cover (to match the carpets) for the Spare.

I went through getting all the lights, blinkers, horns, wipers etc. working,
cleaned up the wiring in the engine bay.

Pained the gill white, not too happy with it, I used the same paint,
the same clear, but it looks different, I'll leave it, it may fade to the right shade.

Also made some temporary bits, the thing under the grill, there was an inch gap,
and the blinkers, both are works in progress. but looking pretty good for now.

So What's left.....
Plenty... I still have no radio installed, I still have not wired the side mirrors,
There is all the the seats and door panels to trim, Rear disc conversion,
Alarm, Power windows.... AC if I can find someone selling one....
The thing still has not been buffed, that's how it came off the gun...

But none of this stuff has to be done for Rego

Oh... but the big ones are to come... Very very soon, now it complete (nearly)
The Prairie still has a crack manifold, and its still blowing smoke...

Then there is the question ???? Will it need a engineers certificate to get rego'd

**** UPDATE ****

All Done.
Really want to get the seats and door cards covered so it looks finished, but that can what.

All the mod-ing is finally over.

Now if I can get it to stop smoking, then I can get that blue slip and rego it.

I cant wait,
