Update

Post by Timmzy »

Changed engines over on the weekend.

Out with the suspected spun bearing engine. Its still got good compression, engine oil was OK and it turns over by hand. So it will be interesting to pull it down and see what's wrong. Anyway more urgent issues - like racing in 4 weeks (!)

Blue RRC engine in the pics is the 1.7L stroker that is damaged and the metal/blasterd BRC in the pics and in the car is the "new" standard engine. Everything is stock on this engine from what I can see. It looks like someone has rebuilt it at some point, it has different pistons in it with 3 & 4's stamped into them - other than that standard head, standard cam and valve springs. However I did tidy up the dags on the exhaust ports with a dremel - nothing more though.

Ill bolt up the manifolds/turbo, etc and reset the wiring harness in place. Hopefully power it up with a system check and then see if it'll start. It kinda has to because its off to the dyno for a tune and master flogging to ensure it'll take 30mins on the track, then good to go. Of course that's the plan, lets see.

Plan is to check and try and start it next weekend, go over everything and then dyno the week after. It'll be close.....

Unfortunately while removing the original engine, it lurched forward on the engine crane and took out the raidiator. That's what you get for doing things in a hurry. Raidiator shouldn't been there.

GOtta go and tidy up the shed- shit everywhere.

Hey,

Yeah its a T3 flange. Using an RB25 turbo. It worked really well with the previous engine, will see how we go with this standard one.

Update,

Got it all back together. Everything went AOK.

Fuel pressure was up and good. cranked engine over with no plugs in until oil pressure came up - for first start.

turned computer and electronics on to start and then:

Went to start it, clunk, clunk, clunk. Shit. So I started rechecking, I thought starter/flywheel/pressure plate because the clunk was engine revolution based and oil pressure seemed OK. My justification was the engine cost me $100 :) so then:

Oil pressure OK, everything checked out OK. Clunking disappears when I pressed the clutch in?? Thrust bearing? Surely not because the noise would be the other way around. IE noisy bearing when depressing the clutch NOT when it was released? So this had me baffled last night........

So I thought stuff it. I have come this far, I'm going to start it. Turned the key and it locked up on the starter like a massive CHINK noise and stalled the starter. So I thought no valve timing is out and I have just wrecked then enigne so I pulled the plugs and checked timing - All ok??

So I depressed the clutch and the engine started straight away. I released the clutch in neutral and it makes the is terrible rattling sound and the CHINK stops the engine. I'm like WTF is going on here.
And it rattles like hell in netrel to with clutch out. So I wasn't sure. Keep in mind this is my "trusted" gearbox I have been racing for years.......haha

SO once agin I thought I've comethis far lets get it into gear and at least try and move it - if only to warm up the engine to set tappets and re-tension head....hahah funny. This was a mistake :)

Well everything else was OK, so I went to reverse it out of the driveway and the car locked up and wouldn't move! So then I selected first gear and moved a bit and locked up again. FUck it got it inot first gear and then sencond gear and CHINK it locked up and I hit my head on the steering wheel. LOL

So in summary everything worked just fine :)

ANd now I have to remove it all agin and replace with the spare gearbox I have because clearly this one either has a fork dropped or a dud iput shaft bearing that is NOT going to allow me to race.

I'm racing in 2 weeks if it fucken kills me.

Turbo and manifolds out tonight hire engine carne THursday for a swap over.

ON the up side, the engine feels REALLY responsive and low down torque. once I get this sorted I need to get it onto the dyno.

ALso on the upside, my race engine which I though I supun a bearing in, may not have. It may have been this gearbox problem all along because the noise is at the frequency of the engine IE input shaft not the frequencyt of the wheels. Although it didn't lockup on the race track........thank fuck...

What does everyonw think?

Got old gearbox out and another replacement in - I don't know the status of this replacement gearbox, but it doesn't lock up it neutral when I turn the input shaft by hand, and it goes into all gears and rotates so I guess we shall see. It doesn't appear to make any noises like the other one.... Gave me the chance to check on a couple of things I wasn't happy with the clutch and thrust bearing - there was nothing wrong so I just made sure everything was clean and put it all back together. I was thinking that noise was clutch plate or thrust bearing related initially, so I just wanted to check.

Re-assembled everything tonight and also did a few race prep things bled brakes, etc.

So its all ready to go!

Only a couple of small things to do like catch-can, fit thermo's back on and then its ready for dyno. I reckon dyno will be monday. Mixtures are close off boost and OK for driveability, but I'll know more tomorrow when I get some gearbox oil in it and take it for another drive. I need the dyno guy to make sure the mixtures are spot on for boost cos its going to be on all day.

Race is in 1 week and 1 day so there is probably no more time for any more major problems, so I am really trying to do things slowly and properly.

Post up some photo's later, havent had time.

I once had one of the three bolts which holds the mainshaft in the box come loose and jam itself under the 1st/2nd selector fork preventing me from having 1st gear for more than 6mths. I wonder if you may have a floater in your box. You may have even stripped a tooth of one of the spider gears and its doing something similar.

Sweet, keep us all posted. :D

Just got back from test drive. It was perfect!

Filled up the gearbox with some more oil, checked water, oil, etc. Then just drove queitly around the streets near my house until I was a little more confident. Then I went down the main rd and zipped along at 80kmph to check 5th gear etc. There was no-one around which was good considering it doesn't have a bonnet or front end :)

Goes into all gears, doesn't grab or kick, doesn't wine, its smooth. Engine tune is out a bit. Lean at idle and ridiculously rich on accel enrichment. High RPM low load is rich as hell. Really held myself back didn't get it on boost at all. It spooled a little on low rpm high TPS position, but it was still rich as fark.

So all that's left is a clean up of the plugs, refit cooling fans and catch can -- then its ready for the dyno! SHould be interesting as to what it does.

Obviously I didn't have time to do my full-on fuel system with bigger injectors, swirl pots etc, but just happy if this setup gets me out and circulating. Comprimise to have fun this year :) maybe a Xmas project.

Thanks to Evan and Callum for their help, information and offering of bits to get it this far. Definantly owe a beer or 10 to both of you.

Pics to follow. Going to have a break tonight. More work tomorrow.

Success finally

Post by Timmzy »

Dyno tonight was extremely successful.

I didn't expect it to get off the dyno without a failure given that I didn't know the condition of the bottom end OR the gearbox. And the fact that it was done in such a hurry - only to have the original gearbox changed out at the last second. I was reasonably confident with the head, because I actually inspected and rebuilt it. Headgasket wasn't confident either...so

We strapped it all down at about 4pm and got it all going. It was bucking and kicking missing on the dyno - it was REALLY bad and it definantly wasn't doing that when I was driving it around home...anyway -- New set of plugs and that fixed. Mixtures were that rich that the plugs were fouled.

After that it did-the-business perfectly.

Phil retuned fuel maps for this engine which took a while with all the load points, took out a heap of fuel, checked ignition curve which didn't appear to be doing anything unusual. Phil ensured me that this was an extremely safe tune and that there was heaps of headroom left with the injectors.

Then the fun began. I asked him to give it real hiding to see if anything would let go. It held up well - it dropped coolant temp very quickly after an absoulte fucking flogging, which was good. Then gave the gearbox an absolute flogging aswell through the gears - at my request to check linkages, selectors and those damn engine mounts. If it was going break, it would've been tonight he was like "are you sure?????" and I just said to him give whats its gonna see on the track....that was interesting. His terms were "its gonna be fine, I gave it its berries and had to hold the wheel to keep it on the dyno"

The final result was 120kw at the wheels 11PSI of boost on the standard wastegate which spiked a bit on initial spooling which I didn't believe, so he spun it up again and held it on flatout at 117-119kw consistent at 5700RPM power loaded on the dyno for about 5 seconds - absolutely flogged the shit out of it. The only down side was that I didn't get to see peak torque and I couldn't get a print out because that part of his dyno stuff was broken. Which was a little disapointing because I still cannot believe that it made that much power. To be honest I didn't think it would make over 100kw at the wheels.

More importantly - it runs, it doesn't leak a drop of anything from anywhere - which is god damn amazing - and from what I can tell its got 15more kw's than my other "race" engine. Time for a rethink there I believe.

So...final race checks tomorrow night, tyre pressures, brake bleed, change engine oil and filter, change gearbox oil, refit front bumper and grill.

Then its race time! I going to enjoy flogging the shit out of it on SUnday.

bed. tired.

Hi Callum,

Yep! The 6 hour is on this weekend. I think it would be worth the driveup for anyone into cars. 250ish cars have entered - its a great day out either day. Saturday is scrutineering/practice/individiual time nomination and Sunday is race day. Both days cars are on the track and circulating.

Uh yeah I missed that detail haha:

Phil Awramenko
Geelong Tune-up Specialists
Hurricane Electrical products
13 dendle st. Grovedale
Ph: 52416622 or 52416655

He has done 3 dyno's on my ET over the years, and a number of other small dyno jobs for SAE car, etc. He preps a couple of GT Cup Porches and also various speedway cars. You can imagine that's big in Geelong. Also does some drag racing stuff and used to hold untubbed rotary record in an S1 RX7 a few years back. He has a level of knowledge equivalent to the Oracle..... :)

He conservatively tunes and won't push through problems when they come up. I drove past at least 10 of these named workshops to go to him. From Chadsonte to Geelong. Crazy I know but I trust him with my engines, he is level headed and isn't stedfast on power figures. More safe tunes and reliable racing.... He charged me $200, it was on the dyno for 3 hours and that included a set of plugs. I think that is reasonable.

Well, the 6 hour is done!

I was part of Team Rising sun - a bunch of Jap cars that originated from Toymods forums

Setup Saturday for practice and went out. Tyres were over-inflated and engine overheated and oil was over-filled, and it threw a plug lead. So slow times catchcan overflowed and went into pits. So I cleaned everything up, fixed tyre pressures and went out again only to do 5 laps before seriously overheating it. I couldn't figure out why...it was mid 20's so day wasn't too hot.

Saturday night I pulled the grill and bumpers off it - did what I could to keep it cool.

I selected a 1:51 time as my target. I consisently ran 1:53's and didn't want to breakout so I went with that.

Sunday came around and the race began. I was 3rd out of 6 drivers to go, so I had to wait around 1hour before my allocated run. I went out and did 6 laps - the last 2 laps it was dropping 2 pound boost each lap - and Alpha's were passing me all over the place, which is quite frustrating. So I had to come in which sort of stuffs up our team change overs. Anyway got back in andthe boost pipe from turbo had slipped out of intercooler piping. Fixed that and checked all the others.

Headed out for a second stint with all 11 PSI back in the tank and it was on! I used a whole tank of fuel and was out there for about 50mins! I passed all those Alphas back big time and raced as hard as I could to pull up to the nominated time. I think I pulled a few 1:52's and 53's and mostly 54's. When things got a bit warm I'd just back off a little and take hit on time up to 1:59's. But with grill and bumpers removed it recovered within half a lap. Then it was on again.

It was the best session I have ever done in the ET, it was hard racing on street radials with all these good cars on semi-slicks but I just did my best. The suspension (rear) and tyres are really quite poor for handing - have to do something there. Anyway, it was just so satisfying after all of the hard work to just thrash the living F@rk out of it! So much so that I spat it off the sweeper twice - once in 4th gear and it got a little loose - I accidendlyty hit the brakes mid corner trying to grab 3rd and went off the sweeper backwards at around 130ish kmph. It took a while to drive back over to the track. The official gave me the thumbs up. You don't get that every day :)

OVerall the weekend ended really well. We came 16th out of 40 something teams and everyone was really happy with the setups.

Pics to come off toymods hopefully tongith. Ill post em up. Also a video on someons camera of a tail happy ET on turn 3 it looks great I had a view. So hpefully I can chase that vid down.
