Spring Rates

Post by Callumgw »

There is a few spring rates on N12 ET/Milano/Exa/Cherries from factory and a few more available aftermarket. So I thought it time we put a list together:

######################################################

FRONT

ORIGINAL FIT:

Australian Exa/ET: 2.0kg/mm (111.2 lb/in) Fixed rate
Cherry Turbo: 2.0kg/mm (112lb/in) Fixed Rate
Cherry NA: 1.71kg/mm (95.5lb/in) Fixed rate
Milano: ?
Nismo Race Option: 3.5kg/mm (195lb/in) Fixed rate
Nismo Rally Option: 2.77kg/mm (154.8lb/in) Fixed rate

Aftermarket:
King (Aus): 1.6-3.2kg/mm (88.4-176.8lb/in) Progressive (Active:2.1-3.2kg/mm (117-176.8lb/in))
Pedders (Aus): 2.6kg/mm (145lb/in) Progressive
Lovell (Aus): 2.65kg/mm (148lb/in) Fixed rate
CMS Performance Coil-Overs: 6kg/mm (335lb/in)

######################################################

REAR

ORIGINAL FIT:

Australian Exa/ET: 1.9-3.5kg/mm (106-195.6 lb/in) Progressive
Cherry Turbo: 2.3kg/mm (129lb/in) Fixed rate
Cherry NA: 1.95kg/mm (109lb/in) Fixed rate
Milano: ?
Nismo Race Option: 2.5kg/mm (140lb/in) Fixed rate
Nismo Rally Option: 2.05kg/mm (114.6lb/in) Fixed rate

Aftermarket:
King (Aus): 1.7-3.0kg/mm (93.6-168lb/in) Progressive (Active:2.3-3.0kg/mm (120-168lb/in))
Pedders (Aus): 2.8kg/mm (155lb/in) Progressive
Lovell (Aus): 3.0kg/mm (170lb/in) Fixed rate

NOTES:
King Springs have a large progressive range. The data presented is from measurements take from their spring and used to calculate the rate and deflection. Most other data is as quoted by supplier.
Pedders have a small progressive element to keep their springs trapped, but this is outside normal operating range.
Lovell have different part numbers for EXA and ET. The Rates are the same but they vary the coil pitch to account for the difference in car weight. So Exa Lovell springs are likely to give a lower car than the ET Lovell springs.
The rear spring rate to wheel rate is 0.875, so for every 10mm the wheel moves the spring moves only 8.75mm. This is because the wheel sits at 400mm from the control arm pivot and the spring centre is only 350 from the control arm pivot.

Comments:
Interesting to note that the ratio of front to rear spring rate for the NISMO options is generally more than for the Aftermarket option. That is NISMO uses relatively more front spring than rear spring. NISMO tend to have stiffer front springs than the aftermarket installs. Whereas the aftermarket installs for the rear are typically heavier than the NISMO options.

Please PM me if you have more data, or if you can measure a spring so I can calculate the values and add them.[/b]
