valve stem seals popping off

Post by boosted » Sat Apr 18, 2015 1:32 am

hi,
trying to get rid of the blue smoke-problem, i changed the valve stem seals. While dismantling, i noticed that a few stem seals were loose on the valve, i.e. not seated on the valve guide any more.
I was confident, that most of the smoke-problem would have been gone after fitting new stem seals, namely these:
http://www.onlinecarparts.co.uk/reinz-7440095.html

I mounted them with the valves staying in the head and pressurized cylinder, but noticed, that they would start to to slip off the valve guide a bit, soon after they were seated at the correct height. Why the hell would they not want to stay on the valve guide? trapped air?(very unlikely... )
However, i finished the work double-checking that they were all seated correctly before reassembling the valvetrain, etc.

In the first minutes of the engine running, i was happy because there was no blue smoke any more, but it came back after a few kilometers :-(

I'm going to have a look at the stem seals again, repeating the job if necessary.

Has anyone have had similar problems? Any tips how to get them seals staying on the valve guides? (maybe i will try to "glue" them in using high-temp sealant)

cheers
martin

Hey mate, I had the exact same experience quite a few years ago. I put it down to shit chinese seals. I replaced them with a genuine set I had floating around. They are meant to be quite a tight fit.

Damo, thanks for your answer.
Now i know for sure that it wasn't me being too stupid to mount them correctly :-)
The best part of the story: I also have a genuine set floating around somewhere, but cant find it since years! Nissan here wants nearly 80 euros for 8 of those little fuckers
Im afraid i will have to buy them again...

Cheers
Martin

Fuck that, you can buy a vrs kit for almost that.
I had a quick squiz on ebay, but there doesn't seem to be anything cheapish that fits my search criteria. Might have to look at the dimensions of the valve and guide to get a generic replacement.

Good luck Martin

Hey guys,
the japanese stem seals arrived, i'm happy :-)

I'm thinking of making a complaint about the aftermarket seals (cost 30euros) as they wont stay seated.
Can anyone tell me the (exact) outer diameter of the valve guides, were the seals are seated? I want to prove to the seller that the oem parts fit, and their parts won't.

cheers
martin
