No Spark :(

Post by do0zy »

Hey guys,
I was hoping you could offer me some advice...

The car started fine this morning, I went to try and start it this afternoon and it now has no spark.
I've checked the following:

-Spark plugs - no spark
-Distributor cap - cleaned contacts
-Checked all leads and connections to dizzy
-Swapped coil
I have checked to see if the coil is getting an power by using a voltmeter on the +ve and -ve terminals on the coil, nothing is being picked up.

Where do I go to from here? the battery has plenty of charge, i've checked all the fuses and swapped out the green relay switch, i'm stumped.

I can't seen anything obviously unplugged in the reverse light loop. I can see two fuseable links in the engine bay (one is green and one is grey) I swapped them over from my donor car - still no luck. I will check the fuse box and the larger square fuses on the weekend. Thanks for your help!

Are you sure there is no spark? What did you do to determine this?

Does the fuel pump prime when you crank the engine?

I tested the spark by holding it with some insulated pliers just above the rocker cover and getting a friend to start the car - I tested all spark plugs.

I worked backwards from there...
I can hear the fuel pump priming, all other electrics seem fine.

Should the coil have a voltage reading from the +ve and -ve terminals?

I took out and checked every fuse, tried turning the car on and it started. I left it running for 10mins, switched it off and then when I tried to turn it on again it wouldn't start. I didn't touch anything while it was running.

Very strange...

I haven't got a spare battery to try, but it is reading between 12 and 13 volts on the volt meter.

I tested the coil:
the primary resistance was at 2.0 the specifications are 0.84 - 1.02, could I higher primary resistance cause this issue?
the secondary resistance was at 11.4 the specifications are 8.2 - 12.4

What HE^ said.
id say you have a failing CAS.
They are available new anywhere that sells EFI components and online.

Thanks for the help fellas.
A couple of questions,

-If the CAS had failed, wouldn't the coil still be showing a voltage reading?

-Above the fuse box there are some circuit breakers. Are they reset a certain way? or, let's say there is a shorting somewhere, would the circuit breaker reset itself when the shorting was fixed?

It will but are you checking BETWEEN -ive and +ive? You wont get anything there.
Ignition ON and check between +ive and ground.

Circuit breakers above the fusebox?? Never seen them. Cant be stock unless ur confusing the row of power relays there for circuit breakers.

Awesome tas,
I tested the coil correctly and it was displaying between and 11 and 12 volts.
The circuit breakers were relays...

I gave my other distributor a good clean, installed it and the car started :)

Thanks everyone for all your help :)
