NA help

Post by Valentich »

Hey guys.... sorry been a while.... but I am ready for another push...
First I'll be looking at the Ugly Duck (Prairie 1) and will see if I can get the problems worked out....
(Still would love help from anyone that can help)

And second
I am looking at making a start on Prairie 2,
I have learned a lot doing the Duck and at least know what to expect.

THIS THREAD
I am looking for help and advice on what to do with the motor.
The e15 (55kw) motor struggles up hills and just feels unsafe...
or is it I am too much a lead foot...
but forget overtaking another car.

2 Thoughts,
1/ as the Prairie came with a ca18 everywhere else except Australia...
is to put in a ca18de (stock as I am not looking for too much power)
or
2/ to do up the motor a little. keeping the E15...
I already have extractors for a e15 and fuel inject it.
I know it would be easier to just put a bigger carby on... but that just would not be me..
I also have a stock manifold and also have a Jap manifold.
and I have a fuel injection piggyback unit that I think will do fine to tune the setup

What ever I do I want it to look neat and stock.
and I don't want to have to engineer it (like I have to do with the Duck)
So things like stock air boxes, The log, AFM.
I would be happy with 70kw-80kw really...
I don't want it to be a fuel guzzler....just a little more drivable.

So please any advice, procedures and thoughts.... Parts lists
I really would love everyone's input

E15 (55 kW; 74 hp) E15E (70 kW; 94 hp) CA18 stock (68 kW; 94hp) CA18DE (98 kW; 131 hp)

PS: Prairies at 975kg don't weigh as much as you may think it might.

Not sure how in depth this is, but have a look. It starts at the bottom is this page (page 6). E15e to E15s conversion

Thanks, its a start....

I was thinking of the things that might be different on the motor,
and the thought of the CAS. I am guessing that the dizzy on the carby is different to the EFI one.
Any thoughts...

also as always this project is to be done on a budget.
I lost track of the duck.... but I'm pretty sure that the whole thing including Prairie and donor ET has cost me under $4000.
And I want this second one to be even less.

So I am looking for some cheap parts..... you know wiring loom... computer... factory air box... log... etc.
If you got any....Please contact me.
Thanks

Well, I have done an efi turbo conversion to the old GX. It needs to be said straight up that it is NOT worth the time and money converting a carb engine to EFI UNLESS you have all the stuff you need just laying around.

its time consuming and the hidden costs hurt when you add them up
For example, just consider the cost of some new EFI fuel line at around $30/meter! Your going to need close to 2 meters of the stuff to begin with. T-bolt hose clamps at a couple of dollars each.........and so it goes.
Add gaskets, wiring and terminals, relays and sundry other parts, fasteners and supplies.
There is several hundred dollars just in bits and bobs alone.

If your not put off by this then to covert over to EFI, you will need:

ECU
Engine loom extracted from an ET loom
AFM
Inlet manifold AND inlet runners/injectors, log etc
Fule pressure regulator
EFI Distributer
Electronic coil and coil trigger (igniter/amplifier/transistor) whatever you like to call it
Either, EFI distributor housing, or ability to modify NA to accept an EFI temp sender
EFI fuel pump setup and return fuel lines
Additional wiring and relay for EFI fuel pump
Air filter box
Rubber connection hoses, pipes and clamps

This is just what comes off the top of my head. Give it a lot of thought!!!!
I wish I did back then. I NEVER would have bothered and just bought an ET to begin with if I wanted a turbo Pulsar.
Same here with injecting a Prarie imho.

Well your right, and I do respect your knowledge,
Prairies came out with the CA18 and even a 2L 4WD in other countries, but not in Australia,
If it was just as simple as finding a 1.8 (But Prairies are getting pretty rare,
this second one took years to find. For some reason people are just sending them to scrap LOL)
but I cant help shaking the thought that this is the way I want to go.
Its basically what I did with the Duck
(Except I don't have a donor, and I want to keep the stock engine, It is in very good condition).

But there is a few things that worry me.
Like
After its all done. Will there be any real improvement in drivability and power.
ALSO to tell the truth, I would not know what carby could be put on if I did not inject it.
and there is always the thing... Is it easier to just put a bigger motor in like a n13 1.8

But back to the efi problem.
I have about half what I need, I have 2 intake manifolds and all the bits that go on to it (Rails, TB ect)
I also have a complete dizzy of a et.
What I think I am missing is the ECU, LOOM, LOG and air box.
Also I guess things like O2 senor and how to mount it to the extractors, or is there a way around it.
The piggyback is a microtech d5.

Unlike the Duck,
I don't want big power so there is no need for a surge tank,
I am thinking of just dropping a VN/VP fuel pump in the tank,
Also I wont need to upgrade the fuel lines, I think that the standard 6mm lines will do.
When I look at things like that and the massive amount of mods that where done on the Duck,
It all seems pretty easy (No pumped guards on this one LOL)

But please more input... Thanks
