wheel bearings

Post by poeticjustice88 »

Could someone please shed some light on the front wheel bearings for me.

Been to two different workshops, one says one thing, the other says something different.

Are the front wheel bearings a simple job able to be done in the driveway, or do the require specialty tools like a press or anything?

Wheel bearings on the front are more or less the same to change as on the back.
Sometimes the axle shaft is difficult to get out and needs to be pressed out. Sometimes it just falls apart.
The outer races have to be driven out and new ones driven in.
The inner races often need to be pulled. Sometimes some careful drifting will remove them.
Otherwise grind partway thru them with a 4" angle grinder, careful not to grind thru into the shaft.
Hit hit them hard on the grind cut with a large hammer and big cold chisel.

reassemble with new bearings and dont forget any bearing spacers/shims.
use new grease seals and your away.
