fuel check valve

Can anyone tell me what the fuel check valve on top of the fuel tank does and is it essential? i need to either remove it or move it elsewhere to fit my fuel tank. Cheers

If its what im thinking about, its part of the returns from the carbon canister and is a checkvalve to prevent the tank being pressurised when boosting.
