which turbo?

Post by robbo »

At the moment the car is running a gt2876r running 14 pound, and boosts from around 4000rpm onwards. However I would like to "downgrade" to a smaller turbo to reduce the lag, as well as relocating the oil return line and running a dual stage boost setup (to lower the boost for daily driving) in the process. I have access to a t25 which has been high flowed, would this be an appropriate action to take, given that I am not chasing enormous dyno figures? The car is tuned to put out 133kwatw presently.

What are peoples' thoughts?

ok cool, so the consensus is that a t25-based turbo would be more appropriate than a gt2876r monster? looking forward to seeing more boost at lower rpms 8)

I down graded from a T28 to T25 for that reason.
Really... monster figures are cool, but a waste if you cant use them.
If you doing the daily driving thing.... It's smart....
Plus less temptation to put your foot down and feed the boys in blue.

So far I'm happy, but I have not done any real driving with the T25....
I did feel the T28 was too much....
but then... The bitch had this ridiculous heavy duty clutch...
and I mean ridiculous, it took too much force to push down...
you would die driving down Parramatta rd in traffic LOL.
I drove a Countach for a while and that was easier...

Anyway My thumbs up to the idea
Quick and nimble small car that can be driven daily sounds good to me.

Yea I tend to agree with having less power, but having it more usable when driving. I purchased two high flow t25's from a friend yesterday, one is in good condition, and the other needs a rebuild so I'll keep it as a spare

Thanks for the advice guys!

Hey Mike,
Glad the see you are enjoying the car.
Just remember when choosing a turbo, the current turbo is externally gated. There may be some modifications needed to make it all work. Just something to consider.
keep the updates happening. I'm glad the car went to a good home.
Cheers

For such low boost, you wont find any difference between the turbos as far as power is concerned but a massive difference in response.
Id be fitting a standard T25 or a "G" if you can find one in any decent order. The Disco is a pretty hairy setup for such low boost. Specially with such a large back housing on a small engine.

if your prepared to spend your money wisely, there are some excellent bb turbos in the GT25 range.

Thanks Dean, I'll consider it when I eventually go to put the turbo on. The car is amazing, already clocked up 5000km's in it, and have added a sway bar, turbo timer and started fixing other little things to make it perfect. It's also entered in the skyline nationals show n shine down in Goulburn in a couple of weeks time, so I should have some good photos to show the progress after that!

Response is definately a positive for putting on a smaller turbo, where would you place a high flowed t25, in between a standard t25 and a t25g?

Depends on "how" its been highflowed.
I "highflowed" my T25 by adding a T25g back housing,,,,,,.......!!
