WHICH HEAD TO REBUILD

Post by congers87@hotmail.com »

Hey guys,

I have 2 Turbo heads. The one with the pitted compression chamber (looks like its got acne scars!!) and the other has 3 or 4 rotting coolant galleries. The one with the pitted compression chamber looks like its loosing meat in between the exh/int valves. It also looks like it has been shaven a few times or do the valves usually protrude past the deck surface? I know this head to be working and its only the compression chamber nearest the dizzy that shows this pitting. The other head I don't know if it was working or not.

Picys are below

I see my options as these.

1. Fix either one of these heads.
2. Find an atmo head that hasn't been shaved a million times and build that up.

I'm going only as far as DIY port, 3 angle valve seat and any refreshing that's needed. Suggestions please. Cheers Chris

a head in good condition would cost you more than $50.

Theres 2 for sale at the moment, for 80 and 100, both rebuilt, one is ported. Considering these cars are dirt cheap ATM I cannot see any dramas getting a better one than he has for 100 or less. But I wouldn't touch the ones he has lol

I would pay $100 ish at 'U-Pull it' for a turbo or non turbo head and it might be just as shit. If someones got a better head than the ones I'm presenting for $50 i.e. not warped, cracked and have more material I'd be keen. But I doubt it.

Are those coolant galleries in head 1 a massive issue? And if so is that something that can be repaired with some welding by a head specialist?

thanks for the responses

the corrosion in head one is to close to the combustion chamber to even consider using it as is, it should be fixable but it would cost alot more to do this than to buy another head as it would need machined after any welding is done. i hate to say it but i would take both of them to a scrap yard and get what ever they are worth in scrap after you strip them of all parts that you may need valves etc and put that money towards another head from someone here

I'd use the won with the pitted chamber you
Could just clean the chamber up and give it a polish.
Or you could use some metal mend and get the head surfaced.

If you are hell bent on using one of the heads, I would use the pitted chamber over the corroded water galleries. With the pitted one you can see where the problems may be!

I'd be taking the good valves from the corroded head, and reseating them in the pitted one (on the previso that the valve seats arn't cracked or warped).

First step would be to smooth back the chamber to remove all the lean-out carnage with the old valves in place to protect the seats. Then smooth the other angles around the valve including the sharp fine lips around the spark plug. Put a bit of effort into blending the valve seat into the chamber also, there is usually a fine lip between the two.

Even if the result is not micky mouse, it is experience you can't pay for!

Thanks for the comments thus far even if you kents do call them boat anchors etc etc. You bastards. Thanks Damo for the constructive advice. This one can be my practise "DIY port and lean out repair" head. Fuck it. I'm gonna go through a number of them throughout my time with the N12, cant do any harm.

Cheers blokes,
Congers
Still keep eyes peeled for a good one to build though.

if you are going to rebuild one and scrap the other you could get one cut in half so you can measure how far you can port before you go to far :)
