I'll let the other guys answer your question.
But FYI
In NSW if you want to keep it legal, and put 17" rims
By the book, they can only put 185/45 R17
i.e. Total wheel diameter no more than 590.2mm & 200mm wide
LOL What a joke

But maybe someone can help me, vehicle standards (and the Manual) say that the ET came out with 175/70R13
But The ET rimes are 14".
Any clarifications
Sorry for the Hi jack
Look at the articles under "ET Disc Conversion on your N12 EXA Turbo"
You will see a little mod suggested so the wheels wont rub.

You can legally go 2 inch up in wheel diameter, and 40mm width over the largest tyre/wheel combo for the entire model run. So, ET's had 14's and 165's? So, 16's at 205 would be the biggest you could go without an engineer.

People get this wrong all the time, and get in trouble.
I'm not speaking for all states, I only know NSW.
Rule of thumb don't always work
In NSW the RTA (vsi09_rev4), you are allowed
"An important requirement for all replacement wheels is that the
wheel track must not be increased by more than 25mm
beyond the maximum specified by the vehicle manufacturer for that vehicle."
&
"The outside diameter of the wheel and tyre combination must be no more than
15mm over the largest diameter wheel and tyre combination specified for the vehicle
OK if a wheel is 175/70R13 as stated in the manual
Its like this
175 x 70% = 122.5mm
then x2 for the upper and lower tyre wall
122.5 x2 = 245mm
now 13 inch is the rim diameter
so
13 x 25.4 mm =330.2mm
QED
Total diameter is
330.2 + 245 =575.2mm
Add the 15mm and you get
A total max of 590.2mm
Now if you want 17"
First the crap bit
175mm + 25mm = 200mm
So 205 are (technically) out
195 are the best you can have.
but screw that I WANT MY 205s
again 17" rim is 431.8mm
If you take this from the total max 590.2mm
you get 158.4
divide by 2 (/2) for the upper and lower tyre wall
158.4 / 2 =79.2mm
The tricky bit
79.2mm / 205mm then x100 = 38.6
as you cant get 38.6 series tyres you have to go to 35 series
QED
205/35R17
or
195/40R17
If you go through the same thing with 16"
205/45R16
or
195/50R16
But in theory you can go 195/25R19 and still be 100% legal
This is if you are really worried about keeping to the law LOL
But like Damo said, the trick is getting conformation of the largest from its model run and work from that, or get them engineered if you got the money.
NSW Road rules suck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
