Basically a friend is doing the head gasket on his exa, It's going off the be machined tomorrow, So my question is what are the torque settings for the head bolts?

Much appreciated Baz

hey, dont have my manual around right now, but i found this :
Install the cylinder head on the block and tighten the bolts in stages: first tighten all bolts to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm), then retighten them all to 51 ft. lbs. (69 Nm). Next, loosen all bolts completely, and then retighten them again to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm). Tighten all bolts to a final torque of 51-54 ft. lbs. (69-74 Nm).

I would be careful with not putting washers under the short bolts, as I have had a bolt bottom out and shear off mid way up the shaft!

Yep. That's horseshit. Use the washers.

i think it's to do with being a monotorque head gasket. you shouldn't have to re torque them after a certain period if you do that procedure.

Deff use the washers lol, as we found out that the bolts will bottom out and not tighten up correctly and then you will have leaks lol

What is also crucial is to make sure that the washers are not "1 sided".

These head washers are a fairly funky design and are NOT just plain flat washers.

They have a chamfer stamped into the hole to accommodate the radius which is rolled under the bolt head and if this radius is not under the bolt head, vastly inconsistent torque settings and eventually snapped headbolts can be the result.
Often, these washers have the chamfer on both sides to allow for the idiot factor but I have seen plenty of them one sided.
