STI turbo setup.

Post by WIKED1 »

Hey guys my cousin is currently running a WRX turbo and is thinking of going up to an STI turbo. Currently running 14psi with 160hp/600+nm (i will try to find the dyno graph).

Following mods (that i know of)
- wrx turbo setup
- microtec mt8
- air filter
- 3 inch afr exhaust.

We've got 5g to spend, my cousin was thinking of the following:

Camtech cam, custom intake (including fuel, injectors, throttle body etc...), deck and o ring, stock pistons, rods and crank, copper head gasket, port and polish the head.

I wanted to ask what would be the best way to spend 5g?

EDIT: NEW LIST OF MODS - Updated 13/4/15

Back from the dead PART2!!! Haha. Wow this took alot longer than i expected. Here is the list of mods as of April 2015:

Ported and polished head, over sized valves and springs.
Camtech reground mild cam
Block bored out 40 thou
Custom 40 thou over size forged pistons
Custom forged rods
Fully balanced engine
Cometic MLS headgasket
Custom stainless intake manifold with RX7 550cc injectors and VL throttle body
Custom exhaust manifold
Rebuilt VF35 turbo from WRX STI
E16 crank
SARD fuel pressure regulator
Dual Bosch 044 fuel pumps
3 bar map sensor
Microtech MT8 ECU
3.5" turbo back exhaust
Custom intercooler and piping
Custom alloy radiator

With the oversize bore and E16 crank, the capacity is estimated at 1.7L

If ive missed anything, ill come back and add it.

Update April 2015: E85 conversion in progress.

if its an et, must have custom manifold to have a vf turbo on

stock metal head gasket is good for 20psi on a good tune. do the head and intake, upgrade your injectors throw in a cam and spend the rest on brakes and suspension!

prob need larger fuel pump and an adjustable reg. did you make 160hp with these std?

I understand the need for conformity. Without a concise set of rules to follow we would probably all have to resort to common sense.

shiz i didnt realise you were talkin about the turbo not the whole car mi apologies :)

you can pick up some rx7 550cc injectors for around $100 but make sure you get them flow tested and cleaned to make sure they are all running the same, they fit straight in no need to modify anything and its a hell of a flow difference from around 270cc or so on the standard to 550cc, with these injectors you will need new injector plugs as the standard ones dont fit and are crap as they seem to cut out for no reason, then you gota get a bigger fuel pump a bosch 040 intank should fit in easy enough to the standard position, its quiet neessary to have enough fuel if you want to run the big psi, from what ive learned the standard injectors cut out at 16 or so psi as they cant supply enough fuel

the brakes upgrade by reading and talking to people i still havent found a good solution so probobly the best thing ive decided is to get some bigger calipers and discs made up atleast for the front, swaybar front probobly the best is to get the whitline and the back probobly just put 2 stock bars as the whiteline rear isnt that good and you wont find a good one unless you get a custom one made hope this helps

series 5 rx7 550cc injectors will fit straight in without having to change the plugs, the standard plugs are fine as long as the have the retaing clips in place still.......

and go a walbro 550hp pump over a bosch, more bang for ya buck

jus my opinion tho

Haha yeah sorry it is an E15ET engine, red top.

I just checked with my cousin, it was 180hp on 14psi with a bosch 044 fuel pump and a custom surge tank, stock injectors and intake.

I will make a detailed list of whats been done and ill post it up and hopefully you can point me in the right direction.

Brakes wont be a major issue, the car is pretty light so im not too worried.

He's running the WRX radiator? Could you get me some pix of that?

If you have 5G's to spend - sell the current engine and do a CA18DET conversion!!!
Or if you wanna keep the E15ET, then maybe some bigger injectors, a later model ECU, Adjustabe FPR, N13 internals in your gearbox, phantom grip LSD, and a carton of beer.

Nope not a WRX radiator, just an aftermarket alloy radiator.

I wanted to do either a CA18 or SR20 conversion but we cant be bothered. E15 is already there ready to go so we'll work on it.

Also gearbox already has straight cut billet gears.

Does anyone know how much power we might gain by balancing/blueprinting the engine? and roughly how much it would cost?

Our list looks like this so far:
Bigger injectors
Slightly bigger turbo = More boost
VL throttle body
deck and o-ring
copper head gasket
balance/blueprint
port and polish head
stage 3 camtech cam
LSD

My feeling is that the balancing might only be of a benefit if you plan on regularly revving past the 8K RPM mark.

don't go copper head gasket. Just use nissan OEM or cometic MLS.

More info on the straight cut billet gears? Where did you get them from?

Yes http://www.par-engineering.com/index.htm

Ive only done the crown and pinion which cost me 1150.

Was quoted about 4g on a dogbox.

There is no mystery with that stuff.
Any decent machine shop can reproduce that stuff. However the cost is hideous as the pinion, 4th and 5th are machined directly onto the output shaft.

I see no reason why a replacement crownwheel and pinion could not be made, the original pinion machined off an existing shaft and another pinion splined on where the original pinion used to be.

This is pretty basic stuff and would not be horrendously expensive.

Exactly how the replacement pinion would be retained on the machined down output shaft would be a matter of debate but if its a straightcut tooth profile, there is no side load and a heavy duty circlip would probably suffice.

Altho id personally set it up with an interference on the splines and press it on.

The crownwheel is a no brainer being a bolt on affair.
Be handy for very serious guys to be able to change diff ratios easily.

Ill run this past a M8 of mine who specialises in making one off gears and machine parts and see what he has to say along with a quote.

However, Id rather adapt a box from something else capable of the job in the first place.

4g on the dog box isn't too bad. SR20's are around 6-7g
