I was thinking about using R32GTR front end once. got quoted $1300 drive in drive out.. .. couldn't run 15" wheels, they were 5 stud and the offset was kinda killer..

if anyone has cheaper information please let us know.. as i reckon this would be a great mod. everything down to master cylinder to custom caliper mounts.

A mitsubishi option . . .

Post by Callumgw »

Hi Guys,

Jon (with the sr20 ET) used a Mitsubishi combination for his brake set up. Here's a summary of how he described it to me in an email a few years back:

It's using a machined N12 hub assy.

The disc is from a VR4 galant.

The caliper is found on Lancer Evo's, Verada Magna's & Pajero's..... there not that expensive at all.

There is a bit of work getting them on, but well worth it.

I'm not sure if you could get them under 15" wheels (as the caliper sits pretty high) but 16" wheels for sure.

Here's an image of the caliper:

hmm im very interested in the mitsubishi setup. Problem is the rim sizes though. I have 16" rims which would be fine but i use 15" at the drags, so they probably wont fit on any more. :(

on the + side, you can get DBA 4000/5000 series mmmmm :D

Rim size

Post by Callumgw »

Jon only said "he thought 15's wouldn't fit...." I don't know if he'd tried it. I've just sent him an email to see if he did in the end.

There might be scope here for another kit......

Disc Size

Post by Callumgw »

Found some more info. The disc size was 276 x 26mm.
There was no comment on the Booster, so I'd guess it's a standard one.

awesome. i've heard of this mitsubishi mod.

the most important thing to worry about is getting the disk offset correct. as you dont want your wheels poking half a foot out the guards.. standard ET/EXA is about 35mm.

also the EXA hub requires a 76mm center hole from memory.

also i find that my vented EXA brakes are pretty good.they could be better though..

is there anything from an early nissan FWD/4WD we could use..? something 4x114.3 for a start.. the closest i could find on the on the DBA website was an old pintara.. but you'l have to machine out the centre from 54mm to 76 at least..

You guys must have some serious ET's to want 280mm+ discs with 4 piston calipers on a 900kg car.

The Magna combo (266x26) i've got now (still twin piston/276 to go on) pulls the car up fine from 112mph with all of $40 pads.

Remember your only pulling up 900kgs, better pads and prarie slotted discs will be fine IMO for 95% of ET's.

More . . .

Post by Callumgw »

Hey Jon replied an isn't sure about the 15's, he now leans on them fitting . . . Now waiting for the answer to the booster question.

I think psi999 is close to the money. For everyday use the standard EXA and ET setups are fine. The vented disc doesn't improve the braking capability, it allows for more numbers of brake applications before over heating.

That said for track days the vents and larger options are good value. here repeated applications are the killer and confidence is key.

But Shane hit the nail on the head . . . Changing the caliper allows you to select better brake pads and materials. There is very little available for ETs and the praire pad shape. This combination can improve capability and repeatability, moving the limitation to the tyre and suspension setup.

Actually those brakes fit under a 14" rim as we stuck my wheel onto his car to check...

But you've gotta move your wheel weights to get the clearance

Callumgw do you even have a clue who psi999 is?

Oh yes i've been using the stock master cylinder, after all it is rather large OEM (15/16 from memory).

As for better compounds, there are a few places around that will take your old linings and bond better compound material....

slotted prarie discs+better compound pads FTW.

your wheel fitted over the 266mm single piston TM magna setup.

Probably not the VR4 setup though.
