RING GEAR?

Post by ms2et »

Gentlemen

I've got the embarrassing sound of grinding when trying to start my 84 ET.
My mechanic suggested that they don't make ring gears for the ET and that I'd have to get a new fly wheel.

Does anyone know if this is so?

Thanks for your time

Yeap thats true, the ring gears are pressed onto the flywheel and dont get sold seperatly, i rang up a local nissan Wrecker today and asked the price of a good manual flywheel with ring gear and they said around $150

my car has that same problem, it sure sucks, people just look and laugh

I had a new ring gear put on my flywheel back in November, cost me i think $130 to have the gear changed and another $25 to get the flywheel machined.
This is how mine looked:

Dont forget the usual remedy for this drama M8.
Elongate the mounting holes in the starter body carefully and move the starter closer to the ring gear. Couple of MM seems to work.
Too close and the bendix drive hits the flywheel.
Seems to work for a lot of dudes and might be worth a try.

As you all can see on the photo, the main problem is not that the starter doesnt reach far enough.
Its the actual ring gear that has moved from its position on the flywheel.

This was a known problem back in the good old days.
Something with wrong tolerances made this happen.
Nissan's fix to the problem was to simply hit the gear back in its position and then carefully secure it with a Mig welder.
Just a couple of small burns does the job.

If done that way try to put the dots fairly symetric.
If unsure rebalance.

Ive done that fix on several Cherrys in Sweden.

If most of the gear is gone and its not yet fixed to the flywheel,
you can always take it off and put it pack on to get the untouched gears towards the starter. =)

Tip: heat the gear up with a blowtorch so it expands. Otherwise it will be a bich to get back on. =)
